  • Development Gag:
    • The derogatory reference to the idea that the Doctor and Master are brothers may be a response to the initial Continuity Reboot plans for what became the TV movie, which included the idea of the Doctor and Master as half-brothers, to the displeasure of most fans when it was reported.
    • The concept of the Toclafane started out when Davies was coming up with ideas for the first series of the revival. At the time it wasn't clear if the Nation estate would permit the BBC to use the Daleks, and the "Metaltron" which turned out to be the titular "Dalek" would instead have been...well, what the Toclafane turned out to be.
  • No Stunt Double: Some of the car action sequences in this episode were filmed by Freema Agyeman herself rather than a stunt double.
  • Prop Recycling: The Gallifreyan headpiece seen in flashbacks was an original prop from the classic series.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The car chase was originally much more elaborate. It was scaled down due to budget concerns.
    • The Mysterious Man from "The Lazarus Experiment" was due to make a cameo appearance. But when actor Bertie Carvel wasn’t free, the character became the Sinister Woman instead.
    • Russell T Davies decided against bringing back the Master's signature weapon, the tissue compression eliminator. He thought it would have been excessive given his other tricks against the Doctor.
    • The Archangel Network was originally called Angel One.
    • The Toclafane were originally called the Roclafane, before it was changed to avoid confusion with the Racnoss.
  • You Sound Familiar: As the Toclafane remove one tenth of the population Noel Clarke's voice can be heard during the alarm calls.
