• Creator Backlash: William Hartnell and Carole Ann Ford hated the script. Hartnell for its long speeches and Ford for the uncharacteristic behaviour.^note That said, the actors seem to have appreciated the opportunity to stretch a bit. Hartnell throws himself into his 'galaxy' speech, for example, and the others similarly bring their A-game. Meanwhile, Verity Lambert thought the scene with Susan and the scissors was a mistake, as it attracted a lot of criticism.
• Inspiration for the Work: David Whitaker drew upon influences of ghost stories and haunted houses.
• No Budget: This was the cheapest Doctor Who story ever made, coming in at £2500. Tropes Are Tools though. The first episode for each of the previous two serials had to be refilmed and were overbudget. As well as fill two empty broadcast slots, this serial was likely created specifically make up for its pricier predecessors.
