Trivia / Different from the Others

  • As Himself: "The Doctor" is played by real-life pioneering sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld and is a not-even-veiled portrayal of Hirschfeld himself, who produced the movie to argue for LGBTQ+ rights and the abolition of paragraph 175.
  • Lost Episode: The film was banned by the Nazis, who destroyed nearly every copy in existence (along with nearly all the rest of Dr. Hirschfeld's work: the famous Bebelplatz book-burning was in large part the archives of his Institut für Sexualwissenschaft). We have the film today thanks to a single print discovered in the 1970s, and about two-thirds of the footage is still lost.
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor: Conrad Veidt was bisexual.
