• Creator's Apathy: The director was more interested in doing a metaphor about being gay than doing an actual Cthulhu movie. He later admitted to not having much respect for horror, including Lovecraft, when starting work on the film.
• Serendipity Writes the Plot: In the dock scene between Russell and Zadok, the U.S. Coast Guard cutter 'Alert' can be seen. No-one realised until editing that the name of the cutter was the same as the ship in The Call of Cthulhu.
