• California Doubling: Dunwich is supposedly located in Massachusetts, but the film exteriors were shot in Savannah, Georgia.
• Typecasting: Giovanni Lombardo Radice once again plays a character who suffers a gruesome demise.
• What Could Have Been: When the movie was initially being promoted in the US, it was planned to be released under the title, Twilight of the Dead. However it was quickly changed to The Gates of Hell after the distributor for the US received a Cease-and-desist order by United Film Distribution Company due to the title being considered too similar to Dawn of the Dead (1978).
