Trivia / Carl's Date

Go To

  • Acting for Two: Bob Peterson plays both Dug and Beta (formerly Alpha).
  • Delayed Release Tie-In: The soundtrack for the short released digitally in February 2023, and was meant to tie in with the short's Disney+ release. Instead, it ended up coming out four months ahead of the official release.
  • Directed by Cast Member: Bob Peterson plays Dug and directs the short film.
  • Posthumous Credit: The short released after the deaths of both Ed Asner, Carl's original English voice actor who passed in mid-2021, and Shōzō Iizuka, Carl's Japanese voice actor who passed away in 2023.
  • Production Lead Time: Though Ed Asner died in 2021, there was enough of a gap between production and release that Asner had already recorded his lines for this and Dug Days when he passed.
  • Release Date Change: The film was originally going to be released on February 10, 2023 on Disney+, but mysteriously never showed. Then on March 28, 2023, it was announced it would instead play in front of Elemental (2023), releasing June 16, 2023.
  • Swan Song: Of Ed Asner, who passed away at age 91. This was his final performance as Carl Fredricksen and his final role.
  • What Could Have Been: The short was originally supposed to be released as a Dug Days special on Disney+, before getting bumped up to a theatrical short film. This is evidenced by the short's opening, which is the opening House-Hunting Montage segment of Dug Days. When it ultimately arrived on the service, it was titled Dug Days: Carl's Date and includes that series' titles in full.
  • Written by Cast Member: Bob Peterson wrote the film as well, which is itself a follow-up to Pete Docter's Up where he first played Dug.
