Trivia / Carl Barks

  • Disowned Adaptation: While statements of Barks's opinion of the original Ducktales TV series are sparse and inconsistent, many members of the show's creative team claim Barks enjoyed some early ideas for the show, but didn't like the retools made in Season Two onwards. That said, Barks did keep up with the Ducktales comic stories and thanked Marv Wolfman for including him in a Ducktales comic story as Scrooge's banker.
  • Executive Meddling: Barks's comics often suffered from this. Several stories that were considered inappropriate were censored or just thrown out entirely, others were cut down to make room for adverts. Some material is most likely lost forever.
    • One problem for his editors was that Barks had a taste for Westerns and horror films, and liked to incorporate such elements in his stories. Mummies, werewolves, zombies, magical and cursed objects, invisible men, Yetis, ghost ships, and skeletons entombed in castle walls all turn up in various stories. Some of his ideas were considered overly violent or creepy for an underage audience.
    • Trapped Lightning was meant to feature Huey, Dewey and Louie, but because postage regulations meant that the publisher could avoid heavy taxes if the two different comic stories in the same issue didn't feature any of the same characters, Barks was forced to replace the three ducks with Morty and Ferdie (Mickey's nephews). Likewise, Inventor of Anything was supposed to feature Donald Duck but was replaced by a brand new character (whose car and hat strongly resemble Donald's) because of the same reasons.
