• Reality Subtext: One of the last Cold War doomsday films to be released before the collapse of the Soviet Union. Befitting the twilight years of the period, it ended up being rather more hopeful than earlier examples such as The Day After and Threads.
• In the Fairchild AFB mess/breakroom for B-52 crews, Powers Boothe's character is playing Afterburner II, to his left are the pinball machines Space Shuttle and High Speed. In a later wide shot as the emergency scramble alarm sounds for the B-52 crews to rush to their planes, there appears to be another pinball machine or arcade game to the right of the Afterburner II machine, but is too far away from the camera to be visibly identified.
