Trivia / Bug! (1995)

Go To

  • Kids' Meal Toy: In 1999, Jack in the Box released a set of four toys based on Sega PC games. Besides Bug!, which received a wind-up figure of the titular character, there were also toys based on Sonic 3D Blast (Sonic), Sonic & Knuckles Collection (Knuckles), and Ecco the Dolphin (Ecco).
  • Pop-Culture Urban Legends: For a good while, it was assumed that Steven Spielberg, at CES 1995, said "This is the character! This is the character that is going to do it for Saturn." when talking about the first game. However, not only there are no reports of Spielberg at CES 1995 (which was in January that year), Bug! wasn't even shown to the public until E3 1995 later that May. The quote was a complete fabrication as part of a proposal video for Bug Too!, which included a fake interview with Bug himself and Spielberg.
  • Vaporware: The first game was apparently popular enough to have an animated series considered. It never came out.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • In the very earliest stage of production, what would become BUG! was supposed to be a Sonic the Hedgehog sequel. Realtime Associates and Sega of America were in the final stages of approval until Sega of Japan learned of it and nixed the project. The game was retooled as an original IP so that the Japanese side couldn't interfere.
    • According to Playing at the Next Level: A History of American Sega Games, the game was originally developed for the Genesis.
