Trivia / Band Of Brothers S 1 E 1 Currahee

Go To

  • California Doubling: The Camp Toccoa scenes were shot in England (you can tell by the vegetation and distance shot as the men reach the top of the hill during their run).
  • Deleted Scene: Well, cut scene. Richard Speight Jr. (Skip Muck) said that the celebration party scene originally ran much longer – with more banter between the men. It ended up cut down for time.
    • According to Bart Ruspoli (Ed Tipper), there was supposed to be a scene showing the men arriving at Camp Toccoa for the first time, but every time they tried to film it the weather got bad so they just cut it.
  • Enforced Method Acting: David Schwimmer was segregated from the actors playing his men – in order to create a sense of isolation between them and Sobel. Capt. Dale Dye admitted to giving Schwimmer certain preferential treatment during the boot camp training to further up the feelings of resentment. (It didn't work. See Reality Subtext below.)
  • Irony as She Is Cast:
    • During one of the Currahee runs, a man injures his leg and Sobel orders the others not to help him. In the boot camp preparation for this, David Schwimmer injured his own knee – and had to do the scene with the injury.
    • The inspection scene with Sobel confiscating contraband food and pornography becomes doubly ironic when Schwimmer had actually used his privileges to sneak in snacks and naughty magazines for the other actors.
  • Reality Subtext:
    • Accidental example. Sobel orders the men to do a run at night without drinking from their canteens – and punishes Private Christenson for having drunk some water. Neal McDonough (Buck Compton) revealed later in an interview that he couldn't drink from his canteen for the first few days of boot camp – because he had hidden whiskey in it. Accidental because McDonough never told anyone about it until the ten-year anniversary interviews.
    • The part where Winters is reprimanding Buck for gambling with the men. David Schwimmer had snuck off one night to play poker with the actors when he was supposed to be segregating himself from them.
    • Luz does impressions of the officers, something that the actors repeatedly did during boot camp. General consensus seems to say that Rick Gomez (Luz) was second only to Michael Cudlitz (Bull) in doing the best impersonation. This is also Life Imitates Art, since Gomez says in his audition they tested him doing impressions as well.
  • Shout-Out: Liebgott is shown shaving another soldier's head in the beginning scene. The real Joe Liebgott was a barber by trade, and he actually did reportedly help shave the men's hair into mohawks for the jump.
