- Orphaned Reference: Throughout the film Harris repeatedly refers to Cynthia as his "lovechild". While it can be assumed he was calling her that due to her connection to the cult, the original ending shot for the movie was meant to pay it off by revealing Harris is being literal: Cynthia was his biological daughter.
- Stillborn Franchise: 20th Century Fox was hoping for this to be their own supernatural horror franchise akin to A Nightmare on Elm Street, and even signed Richard Lynch on for two more additional films as a result.
- What Could Have Been: Guns N' Roses was supposed to do a tie-in music video for "Sweet Child O' Mine" using clips from the film. Axl Rose's then girlfriend, Erin Everly, shot that idea down as the song was about her and she didn't want it represented by a horror movie.
