Trivia / Attack the Light

  • Flip-Flop of God: In April 2015, then-supervising director of the show Ian Jones-Quartey claimed that the game was "level 2 canon", but in March 2019, he said that both Attack the Light and Save the Light are canon.
  • Licensed Game: For Steven Universe.
  • Self-Adaptation: The creators of Steven Universe were very involved in the making of this game, giving their input as far as character, monster, and background designs among other things.
  • What Could Have Been: Through their Tumblr page, the game developers have revealed quite a bit of content had to be cut for time (among other reasons):
    • Lion was supposed to be a late-game summon, but was cut for time. They even got Steven's voice actor to record lines for Lion's summon ("Lion, I choose you!").
    • The enemy design was originally going to utilize the idea of "corrupted monsters" and "light corruption" before the Steven Universe crew expressed their concerns that it may be too similar to what they were already doing on the show (most of the enemies early in the show are Corrupted Gems) and offered the suggestion of Hard Light constructs instead. Grumpyface Studios loved this new idea and ran with it, resulting in the game as it is today.
    • All Fusions between Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl were planned, not just Alexandrite. Rather than just being cut for time, this was mostly because it became clear that Sardonyx (the Fusion of Pearl and Garnet) wouldn't be revealed until months after the game's release, and having Opal and Sugilite without Sardonyx felt incomplete.
    • The developers had wanted to have an explorable Beach City. In fact, this was something even the crew of Steven Universe had requested as well, but just couldn't be implemented due to time constraints. It was finally implemented in the sequel, Save the Light.
    • The developers also wanted to have more robust and involved puzzles than what was ultimately used in the game.
    • It was planned to have Steven's ukulele trigger a Guitar Hero-style Mini-Game. It one was cut after the designing phase but before the actual programming phase of development.
    • Originally, Grumpyface Studios played around with the idea of both Super-Deformed and pixel-based models for Steven and the Gems, before the Steven Universe crew offered the idea of using the long-distance shot models instead.
    • One unused idea was for the game to start with Steven being given the prism, and told to keep it out of the light. You then had two choices: bring the prism into the light, or give it to Garnet. Bringing the prism into the light continues the game, while staying out of the light and handing the prism over to Garnet would suddenly end the game and give you 100% Completion.
