Trivia / Asterix in Belgium

Go To

  • Reality Subtext: The appearance of Thompson and Thomson is, on its face, a cute cameo and a reference to one of the most famous Belgian comics of all time. Then you learn that Hergé hated Asterix for surpassing Tintin in popularity and most of the work he did late in his life (such as the Animated Adaptation) was an attempt to outdo Goscinny and Uderzo out of jealousy. Goscinny and Uderzo included a respectful reference regardless (In fairness, Hergé had included a character dressed as Asterix in a crowd scene in the final completed Tintin story, Tintin and the Picaros, without directing at any Take That! at this series, so he may have mellowed out in his later years. Given that he passed away just a couple of years afterwards, however, odds are we'll never know for certain).
