Misuse. Made back its budget.

* BoxOfficeBomb: Like the other major video game movie release of 2016, Film/WarCraft, the film didn't fare well in the [=US=], having a $125 million budget and grossing about $54 million (releasing the week after Film/RogueOne probably did most of the damage). It fared much better internationally, with global gross reaching $240 million.

* ApprovalOfGod: The leading creatives of the Franchise/AssassinsCreed franchise at Creator/UbiSoft loved the film's production design and said that they would try to incorporate the film's version of the Animus into future games of the franchise (though three games have been released since, Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla, and none of them features that Animus design).
** Valhalla did incorporate the design into , though.

* DoingItForTheArt:
** The props department went through the trouble of creating working Hidden Blades that could extend and retract on camera because they felt that it was important to be as true to the mythos and setting as possible rather than simply relying on computer animation to get the desired effect.
** There's the fact that all the sequences set in Spain are spoken entirely in Spanish (albeit mostly modern Spanish, not the ancient variation spoken at the time).
** The Leap of Faith, rather than being done with CGI, was done for real by Michael Fassbender's stunt double Damien Walters, specifically to avoid SpecialEffectFailure. At 125 feet, it's one of the longest freefalls ever done by a stuntman.

* DeletedScene: A ton of them, although some have been released.

** Matías Valera, Swedish of Spanish ascendence, plays his character's Middle-Eastern ancestor, assassin Yusuf Tazim, in a deleted scene.

** Maltese Thomas Camilleri and Ukrainian Marysia S. Peres play Spaniards King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella respectively.

* TroubledProduction: The film's script was constantly changed, explaining all the cuts and deleted footage that happened throughout the process.

** At some point, Callum was going to be the sole survivor of the Abstergo revolt, but test audiences found the ending too dark, and it was changed to one in which five of the Assassins survived, including Nathan and Lara. After many other changes, this was trimmed down to just three, with Nathan being killed in the battle and Lara edited out of the film. (Also, a version of the ending had Callum seeing a ghostly image of his mother a last time.)
** In another filmed version of the third act, Joseph Lynch would steal Arno Dorian's Guillotine Gun from the Abstergo museum and use it to aid in the battle. After being taken down by Abstergo guards, he would give Cal his mother's necklace with his dying breath.

** Khalid Abdalla, a Brit of Egyptian parents, plays Muhammad XII of Granada, an Andalusi Arab.

** The first cut of the movie included a subplot in which Callum would meet a spunky teenaged descendant of Maria named Lara, which implies Maria survived to the battle against Torquemada in this version. Lara would be shown to have a mother-daughter relationship with Sophia, as well as somewhat of an oracular role by predicting events via paper fortune teller, and would be vaguely implied to be Callum's daughter or relative. She would ultimately betray Sophia to escape with Callum and the rest, even appearing in the final scene with the other three Assassins jumping down the roof. All those scenes were filmed, with Octavia-Selena Alexandru playing her, but they were ultimately cut from the final product because it was considered she complicated things too much.
