  • Bowdlerise: Some promotional images for the album Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not were altered to remove the cigarette from the cover model's mouth. There was some minor controversy about the artwork, which Moral Guardians said promoted smoking. However, their manager countered that the image shows that smoking cigarettes isn't doing the photo's subject "the world of good"; the cover art is a grainy, unflattering candid shot of a friend of the band after a night on the town, so he looks decidedly bleary-eyed and sweaty.
  • Chart Displacement: A really big one regarding "Do I Wanna Know?" which only peaked at #70 on the Billboard Hot 100 (and was out the next week), in the UK the song did a lot better peaking at #13 on the UK Singles Chart, but even that can come off as surprisingly low for a song that has over 1 billion views/streams on both YouTube and Spotify.
  • No-Hit Wonder: While they're one of the biggest indie acts right now, their only song to chart the Billboard Hot 100 is the already mentioned above "Do I Wanna Know?", which peaked at #70. They are more successful on the charts in their native UK, however.
  • The Pete Best:
    • Glyn Jones, who left the band long before they had even recorded the material that appears on Beneath the Boardwalk.
    • Andy Nicholson is a borderline example. He left the band for personal reasons soon after the first album came out, and just before the band started getting international attention.
  • Reclusive Artist:
    • Somewhat. While Alex tends to grant interviews quite often, he noticeably has no social media accountsnote  and tends to avoid talking about his personal life. In one interview he stated that he'd never make a Twitter account mainly because he worries that there's too much pressure on the social network and that he'd much rather have to perfect his words when writing lyrics, giving interviews, or just chatting in general.
    • This can actually apply to the band in general. Most of the time, they prefer to stay outside the spotlight, and their interviews are usually done with just Matt and Alex, and much like Alex mentioned above, none of the other members (with the exception of Matt) have any social media accounts besides the band's official ones.
