• Write What You Know: Several examples:
  • The book is about Yale and its secret societies. Bardugo was in Wolf’s Head, one of the ancient eight secret societies at Yale. However, it’s an interesting example because Bardugo added a twist - they’re magical.
  • Alex is taking English major coursework. Darlington also makes references to influential writers, though it’s unclear what his major is. In fact, it seems like the most intelligent people (Darlington, Mercy, the highest qualified Lethe candidates), know quite a bit about literature. Leigh Bardugo was an English major, so she likely knows exactly what kind of coursework Alex would be taking and knew what kind of lit references a Yale undergrad would know.
  • Alex has Sephardic Jewish heritage. Bardugo has Moroccan Jewish heritage.
