- Executive Meddling: Don Rosa originally wanted Donald's mother Hortense to appear in the story alongside Matilda. However, editorial mandate dictated that she could not appear in a story taking place in the present day due to it raising the question why she would have abandoned her family, and thus she was removed from the story.
- Falsely Advertised Accuracy: Don Rosa bragged that all his historical details of the story were correct, but as he later pointed out himself, the Priory of Sion was proved to be a hoax.
