* ForWantOfANail:
** The only thing that stopped Wario from winning ''Bowser's Magma Mountain'' was [[spoiler:Chugga having ONE MORE COIN than him, thus letting Chugga win the Coin Star]].
*** The inverse happens in Toy Dream: [[spoiler: Mario wins because he had ONE mini game coin more than Chugga.]]
** A harder-to-catch version during ''Eternal Star'': Peach came in second, and on the last mini-game ("Shy Guy Says"), Chugga won. If you look at the final results screen, it showed that the 10 coins Chugga got allowed him to keep ahead of Peach after the bonus stars were awarded.

* ForWantOfANail: In Mystery Land, if the AI didn't land on the Battle Space on the final turn, then [[spoiler:Tim would've been the one to win the board because he had won both the Minigame ''and'' Coin star while Jon just got the Happening Star.]] But since the AI did just that, [[spoiler:Jon won all three stars, and Tim won nothing.]]
** Also, [[spoiler:if Jon didn't steal Chugga's star and went for Tim, he probably wouldn't have won.]]

* ForWantOfANail: In ''Woody Woods'', [[spoiler: if it wasn't for that one bomb suddenly showing up in Cheep Cheep Chase, Jon would have tied the mini-game Star with Chugga and would have won the board.]]

* ForWantOfANail:
** In the final turn of ''Goomba's Greedy Gala'', [[spoiler:Tim could have secured the win by stealing coins from Jon, had the Goomba not rolled a near unbeatable 9 and thus prevented Tim from reaching Boo. He did wind up in 2nd place, though]].
** The winner of ''Koopa's Seaside Soirée'' ended up being decided by [[spoiler:Tim surpassing Emile's coin count by '''2''', preventing Emile from getting the Coin Star and thus giving the board to Jon]].
** In ''Bowser's Gnarly Party'', what ultimately prevented [[spoiler:Jon from winning the board and sweeping the entire game was Emile's infamous luck finally kicking in and letting him land on three Happening Spaces in a row, securing him the Happening Star and keeping Jon in second place. Specifically, one of them was capable only because Emile's Mini Mushroom wasn't burned]].
*** This deserves further elaboration. [[spoiler:Early in the game, Emile intentionally landed on a Reversal of Fortune space by using a Mini Mushroom and rolling the exact number to land on the space at Bowser Start while also using up a lot of his coins to purchase a Magic Lamp, so he could swap those for Jon's (then) coin lead, which had only a 1 in 30 chance of working ([[Awesome/TheRunawayGuys the Awesome page delineates more on this]]). Although this didn't give Emile the Coin Star by the end of the game, it did keep it out of Jon's hands and prevent a sweep of the bonus stars alongside the aforementioned Happening Space gambit.]]
*** Also, [[LampshadeHanging as lampshaded by Jon himself]], he would've won by literally ''one coin'' if Emile tied him for the Happening Star along with winning the last minigame. Jon would then have this exact combo happen in his favor at E. Gadd's Garage in 6.
*** Tim also would've won if Emile decided to steal a star from Jon like he originally planned on the last turn, especially if he had the Minigame Star like Jon proposed.[[note]]Emile had the minigame lead before Jon snagged it from him by winning the last minigame.[[/note]]

** In ''Goomba's Greedy Gala'', [[spoiler:he almost manages to get first place, but ultimately loses to Jon]]. See also ForWantOfANail above.

** In ''Goomba's Greedy Gala'', [[spoiler:he almost manages to get first place, but ultimately loses to Jon]]. See also ForWantOfANail above.

* ForWantOfANail: During the last part of "Rainbow Dream," [[spoiler:if Jon had waited until the last turn to use his Chain Chomp and steal one of Luigi's stars so he could have earned enough coins to get the Coin Star, he would have won the board rather than Tim.]]

* ForWantOfANail: Quite a few boards have been decided by this:
** E. Gadd's Garage: [[spoiler: Jon only won because he got a Happening Space and won the minigame on the last turn, giving him enough Bonus Stars to beat Emile.]]
** Faire Square: [[spoiler: The many ones Jon kept rolling gave him enough coins to buy enough stars on the last turn to beat Tim.]]
** Snowflake Lake: [[spoiler: Tim won as a direct result of Emile and Jon activating Chance Time three times between them. Tim got three stars as a result while Jon lost two.]]
** Castaway Bay: [[spoiler:Jon getting a Happening Space that swapped everyone's place right before he was about to get a star meant Tim was unbeatable at that point.]] Arguably happened earlier when [[spoiler: Tim]] won a battle minigame weighted at 50 coins which gave him a huge coin lead combined with a low scoring game.

* ForWantOfANail: Given the nature of how Bonus Stars are rewarded in ''Mario Party 7''[[note]]Unlike previous ''Mario Party'' games, ''7'' has 6 Bonus Stars, of which only three of them are chosen at random. The three from ''6'' (Minigame, Action, Orb) return, but three new Bonus Stars were added (Running (running the most spaces; Chain Chomps on Pyramid Park don't count), Shopping (spending the most coins at orb shops; Bowser shops also count, and they force you to pay 20 coins), Red (landing on the most red spaces)). By the combination formula (n!)/(r!(n - r)!), where n is the number of total Bonus Stars, and r is the cardinality of the subset of Bonus Stars chosen (3), there are 20 possible combinations of Bonus Stars that can be chosen.[[/note]], this seems almost bound to happen.
** Averted on Grand Canal, Pagoda Peak, and Neon Heights. The bonus stars did not factor in determining the winners, who [[InSpiteOfANail would have won regardless of any permutation]]. Emile claimed both of the latter two.
** On the last turn of ''Pyramid Park'', Emile rolls a 1. This rock-bottom roll is the only thing that [[spoiler: gave Tim the Running Star and thus the win]].
*** This case is even more complicated than that. [[spoiler: The winner came down to Tim winning the 2 star duel against the AI near the end, everyone's last rolls (Running Star was in range of only 5 spaces), and the last minigame. Had Tim won the last minigame (or if it ended in a tie like it seemed it was about to), it wouldn't matter if Emile rolled higher than a 2 on his last turn, as it would still allow Tim to beat Jon in a tie unless Jon's final roll made his Running Star count greater than or equal to Emile's.]]
*** Pyramid Park became the first board where a different combination could give someone else the win. [[spoiler: Given the possible combinations, if the combination of Bonus Stars included Minigame, and the other two Bonus Stars were ones that Tim didn't have or in which only one could be rewarded to Tim, Jon would've won. There were 9 total combinations]]
*** [[spoiler: On another note, if the Bonus Stars in play were the ones that never got chosen (Action, Red, Shopping), everyone would end with 6 stars, and Emile would win by coin lead.]]
** Windmillville had less permutations than the others, but had the bonus stars aligned in just the right way, [[spoiler: Daisy would have won instead of Jon.]]
** Near the end of Bowser's Enchanted Inferno!, Jon uses his Vacuum Orb and steals five coins from everybody, which ends up [[spoiler: costing Emile the game because he ended up unable to buy a star by a single coin. Emile also would have won if he got both his bonus stars and/or Tim didn't get the only one he won. Additionally, Emile could've won if he got at least 1 coin from the Tweester Orb he threw or if Toadette didn't land on the space right before the star.]]

* ForWantOfANail:
** [[spoiler:Had Jon not stolen 2 stars from Tim in their duel in ''DK's Treetop Temple'', Tim would've won even with how the Bonus Stars were spread out as no one would've been able to top his 200+ coins]].
*** [[spoiler:Moreover, on Tim's way to get the star on the last part of said board, he had just enough to go up to the Lucky Space a third time, which probably would've prevented Jon from challenging him with said Duelo Candy.]]
** [[spoiler:Tim's win at ''Koopa's Tycoon Town'' came about because he obtained the final Bonus Star (Running Star). Had it been anything other than that -- Emile getting Candy and Jon getting Happening Star prior -- then Jon would've won.]]
** [[spoiler:In ''Bowser's Warped Orbit'' if Tim's final turn didn't make him land on the Happening Space that flipped the direction of the players, there was no way Hammer Bro could've used his Bowser Candy to steal 2 stars from both Tim ''and'' Emile nor would it let Jon use his Bullet Bill to nab another star from Emile.]]

* ForWantOfANail: As Emile points out at the end of ''Toadette's Music Room'', [[spoiler: his victory came down to landing on a Happening Space on the last turn, and the bonus stars shaking out ''exactly'' the way they did.]]

When the prize pool for a Battle Mini Game can't be evenly divided, a randomly-chosen player receives the coin left over. When this happens, one of the Guys inevitably announces, "Pity coin!"
