Tear Jerker / What the Raven Saw

Go To

  • The opening of the book. A young boy (about ten?) named Todd is being buried after his horrific and painful death by a car. Later we find out that he had stormed out into the road in anger after fighting with his sister, and as a result she blames herself totally for his death.
  • The scarecrow, from start to finish. Simply left to rot in a field (and feeling every moment of it), his only friend is a young girl who occasionally shows him a kindness. Just that is enough for him to fall in love with her completely, and perform what is essentially suicide.
  • Every time the raven sees Mackenzie she looks a little worse. Eventually she stops eating and sleeping, and picks fights with older boys for the sake of it.
  • The raven, finding the scarecrow's corpse and realizing the dark fate that awaits him if he doesn't open his heart a little.
  • "That be the taste...they taste of devotions."
  • Despite being practically minuscule compared to the examples above, the raven's realization that he has done nothing with his life, upon seeing the destruction of his treasure pile, is quite painful thanks to some beautiful writing.
  • A happier example: Mackenzie knowing the raven well enough to know which bits of treasure to save.
  • Todd and Mackenzie finally reuniting.
Mackenzie: Is he still there? Can he see me? Can he hear what I'm saying?
The raven looked up. Todd was staring at his little sister in the sort of way that made the raven want to shut himself in his belltower and never come out, because he knew no one would ever look at him like that. For the first time he wondered what they'd been like, as brother and sister, and how they were supposed to fill the spaces where the other had been.
Mackenzie: Always rode his bike too fast. Never been able to keep up. But he was always waiting round the next corner. And his jokes were dumb, and he cut my Susie-Ann's hair once 'cause Nan bought me an icypole and not him. And he always went to the toilet when Mum made us do the dishes. I told him I'd never do them again if he keeps faking ways to get outta it, but I really don't mind. It's only dumb dishes.
Raven: Yes. I think he knows.
    Mackenzie: He miss me?
    Raven: Yes.
    Mackenzie: Did it hurt?
    Todd flinches.
    Raven: ...No.
Mackenzie: He gonna forget about me?
The raven gave Todd a final look; it was as if his face had never seen anything else but the small girl standing in front of him.
    Raven: No...I shouldn't think so.
