Tear Jerker / The Odd Couple (1970)

Go To

  • "The Laundry Orgy": After the Pigeon Sisters go home, Felix and Oscar have an extended sequence of lamenting their faults, mocking themselves for their different personalities. Then Oscar, who tried to throw Felix out, says that maybe if they keep being roommates, they can help smooth each other's rough edges. Felix agrees, saying he's already failed as a husband and he doesn't want to repeat the failure as a friend.
  • "It's all Over Now, Baby Bird":
    • Felix's parrot Albert dies, and the way Felix handles it is endearingly childlike. The plot of the episode revolves around Felix finding a proper burial spot for Albert (no easy job in New York City). Eventually, he decides to have an elaborate "pet funeral" for him. While there's elements of comedy in it, Felix's mourning is for the most part played for sympathy, and the funeral is quite touching.
    • Midway through the funeral, Felix starts talking with the vet who gave him medicine for Albert. During the discussion, they realize Felix misremembered the instructions and administered too much medicine. Luckily, it's not long before it turns aroundnote , but for those few terrible moments, Felix thinks he killed his pet.
  • "The Odd Vacation" shows the Ungers and the Madisons on vacation together, with Felix trying to save Oscar and Blanche's relationship with multiple plans, culminating in his faking a fight with Gloria. Although reluctant, eventually she gets into it and yells a number of things at him, closing with the statement that she wants a divorce. When Felix finds out she meant it, he tells her brokenly that he loves her, and Gloria answers that she loves Felix, too, but she can't handle the issues of living with him.
  • In a subtle example from the 1993 reunion movie, The Odd Couple: Together Again, Felix pays Oscar a visit when he learns he's in the hospital, being very concerned about the welfare of his friend; upon his arrival, Oscar is already equipped with bedpans with "GET LOST, FELIX!" written on them. In addition to that, when Gloria kicks Felix out until their daughter's wedding is over, he shows up at Oscar's place. Oscar doesn't want him to come in, reasoning that he values their friendship, which is why he doesn't want a repeat of what those five years they lived together were like to possibly jeopardize it. Felix just stands there, and pitifully remarks, "So that's it? The two people who love me the most hate me?"
