Nigel: "I don't think you'll be seeing Nancy anymore."
Russet: "She's gone too?"
Nigel: "Yes. It was a tragic story."
Russet: "They always are, lad. They always are."
Nigel: "Where do you think they go?"
Russet: "A better place than here, that's for sure."

Saxton has seen a lot of violence, disease, and death, but it has also seen a lot of tragedy.

  • The fate of Edward and Christina Molina, the original residents of Harbour Cottage.
    • Thanks to negligent plumbing, Christina was poisoned by bacteria from the stagnant water hidden beneath the cottage. She died slowly and painfully, suffering hair loss, weakness, and even bleeding before finally perishing the night before May Day. Worse, she died thinking that her husband had betrayed and murdered her when she discovered his secret smuggling operation.
    • Edward's side of the story is just as painful. He had brought Christina to England to make a fresh start, only for her to be killed by the home he himself had created for her. As we can read from the journal entries that appear in the cottage every day, he'd tried and failed to find the cause of the illness, and so was forced to watch as she slowly lost her strength and her beauty, eventually losing her life to the disease. By the time he realised that it was the water, which he'd used to feed and bathe her every day, unwittingly exacerbating her illness, it was too late. On May Day, he left a suicide note cursing himself for indirectly causing Christina's death in his hidden safe, along with a picture of Christina and an antique pistol he was unable to use to shoot himself. Then he hanged himself from one of the cottage's beams.
  • The Saxton Museum is haunted by the ghost of an eight year old girl named Verity Church, who went missing in the 1950's. It wasn't until labourers began converting the town hall in a museum that they discovered her curled up body in the service tunnels within the building, where she'd snuck in and gotten trapped.
  • Rhys Branwen is grief-stricken when his beloved cat Mr. Tibbs disappears, presumed murdered by a catnapper, a terrible fear many pet owners can relate to. Which makes it all the more heartwarming when Mr. Tibbs shows up alive and unharmed outside Ulcombe Church.
  • The tragic story of Nancy and Timmy Brewer, the two young Londoners who remain trapped at Ulcombe Church long after the Blitz has ended. They were unwillingly separated from their father and evacuated to Saxton during World War Two, and their stepmother secretly ensured that none of their letters ever reached each other leading Nancy to believe that their father had forgotten them. Tragically, by the time their father finally came to retrieve them, they'd both been brutally murdered by an insane narcissist, and their deaths were believed to have been an accident caused by heavy rain. He himself died not long after, but not before leaving a message for them at the memorial near the church. After they finally receive the message, giving them the closure they need to move on to be with their father again, Nigel and Russet reflect on how horribly sad their story was.
    • The worst thing is that neither of them remember dying. They spent decades wandering the countryside and the church, waiting for the war to end so they can go home to their dad. When Nancy finally understands the truth, she chooses to keep it from Timmy, fearing that he would be too young to understand. When the time comes for them to pass on, to see their dad again as she tells him, she makes him close his eyes and think of dad so he won't realise what's really happening.
    • Here's the heartbreaking message their father left behind:
Dearest Nancy and my dearest Timmy. I've missed you, while I've been away. The war went on and on. I thought about you every day, every hour, and every minute. I am so sorry I took so long, and I wasn't there for you. Please forgive me. I know how lonely you have been, but things will be different now. I'm coming to see you very soon... close your eyes, my darlings. I'm getting nearer, and soon we will be together. Nothing will break us apart again. My dearest children, I have missed you so much.
  • It's not just the ghosts who have tragic backgrounds. Nanny Noah and Bob Tawney were an item many years ago, and had a child together. But the boy died young, possibly by drowning, and the grieving couple separated thereafter.
