  • Lady Hamiltons speech in episode one to Emma about growing up and marrying in episode one sounds quite cynical and sad.

  • In episode five, Robbie and Max stay up in the kitchen to finish off the wedding cake despite the fact an air raid is happening. Max has seemed despondent all episode and it is revealed that that day is his daughters birthday, and Max admits he's given up on seeing his wife and daughter ever again. Robbie comforts him, however.

  • Freddie decides to break up with Emma in episode five, afraid that he'll hurt her if he dies while on duty. Emma is shown to be heartbroken over this. She leaves him, calling him Lord Hamilton and cries once she's walked away.

  • Billys death in episode six and everyones reactions to it are heartbreaking. His mother, Peggy, breaks down sobbing and is clearly still grieving in the next episode. His love interest Kate is also very visibly affected by his death. The rest of the staff are also mourning him, as Billy was like family to them.

  • Episode eight has several moments.
    • Lady Hamiltons situation. She finds out D'Aberville is a Nazi spy and probably never truly cared about her and he threatens her, causing her to hit him over the head in self-defence, which kills him.
    • Toby is angry at Adil for his betrayal and goes so far as to say he feels disgusted by his relationship. Adil, who believes he was rejected by the man he loves and that he will be outed by D'Aberville goes to commit suicide. He leaves a note for Toby. Toby gets it and races to Adils apartment and finds him unconscious on his bed with gas leaking in the room. He drags Adil out of there and says he's sorry for what he had said and that he loves Adil. The tears turn to tears of joy when Adil wakes up and the two embrace on the stairwell.
    • Meanwhile, the hotel has been bombed, and most characters made it out safely. Betsey is shown leaning by a lamppost just outside the hotel, her head is cut and she says Sonny hasn't come out. She wanders down the path and quietly starts singing A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, no backing track, no loud oomph, just her quiet, sad voice. She sees Sonny across the road and walks over to him. She stops singing and we hear Emma call her name. Only it's reveal she's really lying on the path, bleeding to death. Hallucination Betsey looks to where Sonny was, but he is no longer there. It's left ambiguous if either are alive or not. The entire scene is heartbreaking, and Emma is clearly heartbroken at the possibility of her best friend dying.
