  • Even fifty years after the war and in spite of the lives he saved, some people still consider Philip a war criminal who escaped justice.
  • Philip thinks about the difference between him and his half-brother William.
[William] had been certain of his position in life, from the moment of his birth. He had never had to fight his classmates for his identity, never had to catch the glimpse of superiority in the eyes of the people around him, from the servants to our father's friends and associates. He had never had to feel like an impostor in his own home.
  • One woman wants to bring her dogs with her when she flees Malaya, but the soldiers won't allow dogs on the ship. Her husband has no choice but to lead them away and shoot them.
  • William's death. His body can't be recovered, so his family can only bury some of his belongings in his grave.
Noel: Now, finally. I know how you felt when [Yu Lian] died.
Wu An: It is not something a father should ever have to go through.
  • Two British airplanes put up a valiant fight against the invading Japanese air force. One of them is destroyed and the other is forced to flee. Later Philip learns those two were all that was left of Malaya's air defence.
It was only days later that I discovered the British army had already left, had deserted us.... They had left behind a mere handful of junior officers; the rest had sailed to Singapore. That was where the final stand would be made. Not here, not in Penang. No stand would be made here at all.
  • Philip breaks the news to his father that he'll work for the Japanese government.
Noel: Then that is what Mr. Endo has taught you to be. That is what he made of you. So you have betrayed all of us, all the people of Penang.
  • Philip finally manages to find the prison where Edward and Peter were kept... but it's too late. They've already been transferred to work on the Burmese railway.
Matsuda: The two people you are searching for are unfortunate. I have yet to hear of anyone returning alive from the border.
    • Philip tries to pretend he isn't related to Edward and claims Hutton is a common surname. Matsuda guesses the truth anyway and says he knows how Philip feels — he has a younger brother on duty in the camp, and he would hate to lose him.
He did not bow to me but held out his hand. "If you can learn to bow like us, then maybe I can learn to shake hands like you gai-jin?"
    I shook his hand.
