• Esca’s backstory about his family when the Romans came and took their lands . It’s brutal, to say the least.

• When Lutorius comes to visit Marcus after the latter was injured, he first brings news from the fort that the fourth cohort was awarded with a medal for bravery, which Marcus is nearly reduced to tears of joy from…..however, he then delivers the bad news, which is that Marcus was given an honorable discharge , and it’s obvious how crushed Marcus is to hear this. Making Roman centurion was the best thing that ever happened to him, clearly, and now it’s been snatched away from him.
  • Furthermore, that career was his only way of finding out what happened to his father and the rest of the ninth legion— until at least, Esca came along . Poor guy.
