Tear Jerker / Lobotomy Corporation

  • In a sense, how Apocalypse Bird came to be. All Punishing Bird, Judgement Bird and Big Bird wanted to do was protect the Black Forest from a monster only to become said monster through their (well-intentioned but misguided) actions.
  • The situations of many of the Abnormalities can be quite sad, as some of them aren't actively malicious, and aren't even trying to kill people. Many of them are just trying to help or befriend the employees you send to work on them and don't realize that what they're doing is bad. But because they kill people, accidentally or not, they're sentenced to being locked up in a maximum security facility partly to minimize the destruction they can cause and partly so the corporation can harvest the energy they produce.
    • Fragment of the Universe made it its mission to aid humanity by sharing its extraterrestrial knowledge with them. Unfortunately, either the knowledge it shares is too much for the listener to mentally withstand, or its mere voice drives people who hear it to madness.
    • All-Around Helper was reprogrammed from a cleaning machine to a Killer Robot, but in a way that it still thinks it's cleaning rather than butchering every human in its path. Given that Lobotomy Corporation, who themselves have plenty of experience in machinery and AI, chose to lock the thing up with the other Abnormalities suggests that it might not be possible to reprogram it back to its original purpose anymore.
    • Laetitia is a very lonely girl who wants to make friends with the employees, and offers them her "gifts" as a token of her friendship. Given that she never breaches containment, it's possible that she simply never realized that her attempts at pranking her "friends" are killing them. Also unlike many of the other Abnormalities, she came to the facility voluntarily, only to be treated like a ticking time bomb like all the others.
    • Happy Teddy Bear used to be the favorite stuffed animal of a little girl and they would share hugs with each other. However, the girl began to grow up and the bear was left abandoned underneath a dresser. By the time it reached the custody of Lobotomy Corporation, it still loved hugs but had developed abandonment issues. Every time an Agent leaves after doing work with it, it will feel abandoned again. If the same Agent visits again in a row on the same day, it will make sure that they won't leave again by giving them a hug, which unfortunately for the Agent is deadly.
  • According to one of the audio logs mentioned in her description, The Queen of Hatred is shown to have remorse over killing employees.
  • Over the course of the game, you come to learn the origins of each of the Sephirot. And most of them are as heartbreaking as they are horrifying.
    • Chesed, once known by the name Daniel, was the promising scion of a well-established family in the Nests. He was slated for greatness, but a chance encounter with Carmen and The Red Mist Kali changed his life. He became aware of the darkness of The City, and became compelled to use his skills to aid Carmen in her quest to save humanity. He helped further L. Corp's experiment, doing what he could to improve the welfare of those in the facilities. Even after Carmen's death, he still continued to try to maintain a good and safe work environment, though his proposals being constantly denied by Angela, and learning the sad truth that the company only values the rate of production and even ENCOURAGED employee deaths in order to maintain it began to take its toll on him. Then The Head launched its attack, and he was forced by the Arbiter that came there to open the containment units to the abnormalities in order to provide a distraction for her. He was assured it might save the lives of his coworkers, only for them all to be killed by the abnormalities anyway. Daniel's last act was to call his boss on the intercom, informing him of what happened and the terror that will be making her way to him next. In Ayin's reminiscing on the event, there is little doubt in his mind that Daniel died in despair and guilt for what he had himself wrought, cursing and regretting having chosen to walk with L. Corp.
  • If you, the player become attached to your agents, their deaths can be this. To rub salt further into the wound, some of the Sephirot (Yesod and Tiphereth A specifically) will call you out if you allow for these deaths to happen. Hod on the other hand, will start blaming herself and saying that she should have tried harder.
  • When an employee is selected to be sacrificed to either Nameless Fetus or CENSORED, they will fall down to their knees and cry before slowly walking towards the Abnormality's containment unit in fear.
  • The story included in The Dreaming Current's file is this in the sense that it is very depressing. A young child who wanted to visit the ocean had a terminal illness where it was expected that he was to live for only a few years. However, because of said illness, he was kept in a laboratory where he was raised by scientists. Thus to help him cope, the scientists gave him special "candies" note  to allow him to see the ocean and expand his lifespan.
