  • George and Allowyn learning of Hans' crimes. George realizes that he might have to sentence Hans to death for this, and Allowyn declares that she would go to the gallows in Hans' place.
  • A few chapters later, George and Allowyn spare Hans the death penalty because he only attempted murder, but are forced to strip him of his prince status and exile him from the castle. Words fail Allowyn before she can announce the sentence, and George and Hans don't hold up much better.
"But… but father," (Hans) began, grasping for anything to say, "I… I live here. I am a prince, I promise you, I am."
George looked upon his son for moments that seemed long enough to fill an eternity, and suddenly came down towards him with a speed making Hans flinch. His father's great arms wrapped around him and the king held onto his son in a desperate hug as if he would never do so again. The words whispered in his ear were choked, a gasp from the man's throat between withheld waves of sorrow. "Then show me, son… show me."
  • Heins' apparent death in the storm, as well as him falling through the ice. It gets even sadder when you realize that Hans would have lost the one person who loved him enough to accompany him on his journey, leaving him all alone.
  • The description of the childhood incident in which Hans fell through thin ice when he was five years old, and why Hans was paralyzed with fear when Heins fell through the ice.
  • This line by Kristoff revealing why he's decided to help Hans even though he still doesn't trust him. The author even mentions feeling sorry for Hans when Kristoff refuses to believe that Anna loved Hans.
Kristoff: It's because I feel sorry for him. Anna… is an amazing person. She's funny, she's brave, and she loves her sister more than anything. She thought she was in love with your brother once… she trusted him. He could have had… things would have been different. He'll probably never be friends with her now. I never believed Anna really loved him. But… there was something. She cared about him. That friendship, and whatever might have been… it's gone now.
  • Hans wishing that he was never born in the first place. Heins responds by yelling at him to take it all back and tackling him while asking him to never say it again.
  • Helena's backstory, with her parents getting dismissed from their service in the castle as a result of the King and Queen's attempts to hide Elsa's powers, her father becoming an alcoholic and her mother falling ill, both her parents dying, and her eventually winding up having to work for Egil with little hope of paying off her debt.
  • The final chapter has Elsa and Harald begging Hans to not die as his body slowly starts to shut down as the frostbite spreads across every part. Thankfully, though, he lives, but only just.
