    In The Woods
  • Rob losing everything important in his life at the end of In The Woods, from his position on Murder Squad (which he'll likely never regain), his relationship (both personal and professional) with Cassie, and his chance for closure to his childhood trauma. While all of this is demonstrably his own fault, it's hard not to feel sorry for him.
    Broken Harbor
  • The Reveal near the end of Broken Harbor where it turns out the murderer is neither Connor nor Patrick, but Jenny Spain, who was driven to the absolute brink by the complete dissolution of her family life (including watching her husband essentially go mad chasing an animal in their house that never existed), to the point she believed that a murder-suicide was the only way to make the pain stop for all of them. What makes it even more heartbreaking is that she is still intent on committing suicide; Richie even goes so far as to say that letting her commit suicide might be more merciful than subjecting her to prison and therapy, as he doesn't believe anyone could possibly come back from something so horrific.
  • Scorcher revealing that his mother's suicide was likely prompted by him snapping at her during one of her episodes and telling her he was sick of having to take care of her. He states he fought very hard to live with the guilt and let it not affect him, but it's clear that it still has an impact on him, and probably part of the reason why he doesn't want to let Jenny Spain go free to eventually commit suicide herself.
