* In episode 114 of the anime, Korin tells Goku that Roshi has died facing King Piccolo. Goku's already lost a surrogate brother in Krillin, but now he learns he's lost a surrogate father (someone he held in the same regard as his beloved grandfather). A devastated Goku thinks back to when he first met Roshi and some of his experiences while training under him, all as bittersweet music plays. The shot of a laughing Roshi fading away amid the stars is the perfect cap-off to this sad moment.

There's just something about seeing the lifeless husk laying there all white and motionless that's kind of sad. The somber music that plays upon its "death" doesn't help.
