* In episode 114 of the anime, Korin tells Goku that Roshi has died facing King Piccolo. Goku's already lost a surrogate brother in Krillin, but now he learns he's lost a surrogate father (someone he held in the same regard as his beloved grandfather). A devastated Goku thinks back to when he first met Roshi and some of his experiences while training under him, all as bittersweet music plays. The shot of a laughing Roshi fading away amid the stars is the perfect cap-off to this sad moment.

* On 1º of March of 2024, Akira Toriyama died. This would be sad enough on its own, but his mourning fans have gathered in mass to make two massive genkidamas. One in an obelisk in Argentina, the other virtual, to pay tribute to him.

* On November 17, 2017, Bulma's original Japanese VA (Hiromi Tsuru) was found dead in her own car at the age of 57; needless to say, this shocking news simply ''crushed'' the hearts of Otaku from all three generations of her career....'''especially''' on those who've grown up on the ''Dragon Ball'' franchise.
** Her funeral was a private affair. Her [[https://kotaku.com/memorial-service-for-bulmas-voice-actress-hiromi-tsuru-1822083061 owakare-kai memorial]] was attended by ''hundreds'' and was an elaborate memorial to everything she'd done, with Bulma being the most prominent (her altar even included balloons of the two Dragon Balls she had in the very first episode). And then there's a line from the memorial speech Creator/MasakoNozawa gave for her comparatively-young friend (Nozawa was ''81'' when this happened, to Tsuru's mere 57):
--->"If you gather the seven Dragon Balls, any wish you want will be granted. But this time, they’re useless... I'm so sorry."
* On May 15, 2018, the narrator of the Latin American Spanish dub of the series Creator/JoseLavat died at the age of 69 while working on the dub of the Universe Survival Saga of ''Anime/DragonBallSuper''. While he had a very prolific career in dubbing (being the recurring voice actor of Creator/RobertDeNiro, Creator/HarrisonFord, Creator/MichaelCaine, Creator/IanMcKellen and Creator/AlPacino, among others), for a generation of anime fans who grew up with his work on the ''Dragon Ball'' franchise, his role telling the adventures of Goku and his friends was still his best-known role, and the news ''crushed'' the hearts of fans region-wide.
* On February 29th, 2020, Luis Alfonso Mendoza, the Latin American dub voice for adult Gohan, was murdered. He will be surely missed by all.
* On October 18, 2021, Christopher Ayres, Frieza's English voice actor, had passed away after years of battling health issues. Hearing that he had passed on was already crushing to many fans, but the tweets from [[https://twitter.com/WowSuchKrystal/status/1450591801077796871/photo/1 his girlfriend, Krystal,]] and [[https://twitter.com/SeanSchemmel/status/1450604716459630817?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1450604716459630817%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.eventhubs.com%2Fnews%2F2021%2Foct%2F19%2Fchris-ayres-frieza%2F Sean Schemmel]] are both... ** Tien lamenting Roshi and Chiaotzu's deaths. Which is extra tragic, since it was ''his'' idea for Chiaotzu to try and ask Shenron to send Piccolo away from Earth in the first place.

* Episode 130 has Goku fighting a doll made by Mr. Popo from his hair. In the end, when it looks like Goku triumphed, the doll is revealed to simply have run out of energy. There's just something about seeing the lifeless husk laying there all white and motionless that's kind of sad. The somber music that plays upon its "death" doesn't help.

Goku works his ass off for his strength

* In some ways, Vegeta's years-long rivalry with Goku can be really sad. Imagine being good at something and being proud of what you can do, only to be always bested by someone who [[TheAce is better than you in every way]], and unlike you, [[HardWorkHardlyWorks they never worked hard to earn such awesome talents]]. Vegeta spent years trying to get out of Goku's shadow and become the better Saiyan, and seeing Goku easily do what would take days of training to pull off probably hurt him more than even the most brutal NoHoldsBarredBeatdown. No wonder he was so obsessed in ''Z''.
