Tear Jerker / Annabelle's Wish

Go To

  • The story of how Billy lost both his parents as well as his voice. Grandpa Charles wasn't able to save his daughter and son-in-law, but he is determined that he'll hear his grandson speak again. Sure enough, when Annabelle gives her voice to Billy, he finally gets his wish.
  • Every time Grandpa's music box plays, the one that belonged to his daughter, is a reminder of everything he lost the night that he lost her. Especially heartbreaking is when he sells it to pay off his debt to Gus, all to get Annabelle back for his grandson.
  • When Billy regains his ability to speak, he excitedly runs to the barn to let Annabelle know he can talk with her now. She can only moo in response. Star explains that Annabelle gave up her "Christmas voice" to Billy, even though it means she'll never speak again. Billy hugs her tightly, thanking her.
  • The ending is this on a bittersweet note. Annabelle, now a very old cow, wanders out of the barn on Christmas Eve and collapses in the snow, tired and ready to die. And then Santa appears, turns her into a youthful reindeer and gives her a spot at the front of his team, finally granting her the wish to fly she made so long ago.
    • Not only that, but Annabelle regains her voice, meaning she and Billy can finally communicate. Just as she is about to fly off with Santa and the rest of the reindeer, she bids Billy a Merry Christmas, and he returns it.
Annabelle: "Look at me, Billy! I'm flying!"
  • The original VHS promotion for the Make-A-Wish Foundation set to "World For Way Up Here" (the film's theme song).
