Age of Dragons

    Origin of the Dragon
  • Saitada waking to learn Duncan is dead
  • Brehan singing the Dalish mourning song for the fallen after Ostagar
  • Brehan having to mercy-kill Tamlen
  • All of the origin stories have at least one of these
  • Despite their best efforts and all the good they do, the Wardens can't save everyone. Lenore regularly makes a poison that kills people in their sleep to hand out to those poisoned by the Blight, since the option to even recruit others isn't available to them anymore.
  • Lenore and Wynne walking through the Broken Circle, quietly recognizing the dead.
  • Seeing the dreams each of the Wardens have in the Broken Circle. They end up losing loved ones all over again
  • Hespith gets more page time, and it's brutal
  • Jerath gives Duncan's sword to Saitada and later Duncan's shield to Alistair, ensuring they both have something to remember the man by. Later, he gives Maric's shield to Loghain.

    Awakening of the Dragon
  • When Jerath senses Morrigan's emotions through the ring and realizes his child has been born. The biggest stoic in the series cries himself to sleep. Doubles as a moment of heartwarming when Loghain finds him and promptly tucks him into bed before standing guard to make sure nobody disturbs his rest.
  • Jerath learning his father has been murdered
  • Jerath telling Flemeth why he doesn't drink and doesn't like to be touched

    Side Trips
  • The breakup of Brehan and Leliana. Made worse by the number of worlds in which they never reconcile
  • Lenore trying to save as many of her fellow mages as possible and not being able to save them all.
  • Cyrion's death. He was trying to stop a riot and the provocateurs stoned him. It's followed by Jerath vanishing after a brutal argument with Cathiel.
  • Leliana and Cassandra going to Vigil's Keep only to learn just how many of Leliana's old friends are dead.
  • Divine Justinia has come to see Brehan as a son. When she learns he knows she betrayed the elves and is leaving, she breaks down in tears.

    Hunting the Sky
  • Emory having to leave his nephew behind, and the eventual fate of said nephew.
  • Varla making them watch when she kills Orliv
  • The Pyrrhic Victory at the end

    Order of the Broken Dragon
  • Jerath having to kill Velanna. He acknowledges that she did love him, even though he couldn't return her feelings.

    Rise of the Champion
  • Hawke losing his sister and later his mother.

    Inquisition of the Dragon
  • Ruya finding family members among the dead templars, and wondering how many she killed at Haven.

    Bloodlines of the Dragon
  • The death of the younger Jerath, and Alistair and Duncan's reactions.
  • Loghain Junior having to choose between Alai and Caleb when he can only pull one of them to safety. Alai makes it easier on him by smiling and accepting his choice as the right one.
  • Kieran telling Salla about what his father's fate is going to be, and how Tabris feels it's worth it.

    Apocalypse of the Dragon
  • Anora's death, made somehow worse by the fact that what takes her is simply illness
  • Merrill sacrifices her injured husband so she can use his blood to kill an elven goddess
  • Hawke and Fenris die as they lived, fighting side by side
  • Caleb dies saving Leandra from a demon
  • Varric falls with his beloved Kirkwall
  • Jerath Tabris passes his sword over to Jerath Gilmore as he is forced to fully become Razikale.

A Different Path

     Into Darkness, Unafraid
  • Sulana asking Solas if he'll stand as her Hahren to help her and Iron Bull adopt a child in the Dalish fashion. You know that must have just punched him right in the gut.

     A Hard Line
  • Kas's grief over Kathan and how much of her jerkass persona may just be her inability to get past his death until she's avenged it. She gets a lot nicer after Corypheus is dead.

     The Dark Path
  • Minaeve is nearly driven to suicide by what Tan does.
  • Brehan's realization that Tan's Cold-Blooded Torture has insured Brehan will never again be able to play music.
  • Merrill has not forgotten Tamlen. She named her griffin for him. It brings Brehan to tears.
  • Dagna and Cole reacting to the death of Vigilance.

     Little Lies
  • Matril's entire backstory
  • Matril realizing just what Cole being more spirit-like actually means, and comparing Cole 'forgetting' to watching a work of art fall to the ground and shatter.
  • Dorian realizing that not only is his lover currently suicidal, it's not the first time he's been driven to that particular Despair Event Horizon
  • Jerath realizes he's about to die and his last act is to order Nathaniel to keep his family safe and apologize before cutting the link between himself and Morrigan so she doesn't have to feel him perish.

     Howling at the Moon
  • Solas's growing relationship with Quiyala brings back memories of those he lost in the war, some of which were due to decisions he made.

     Not the Herald
  • Kathan grieving Kas's death and later watching his memories of her in the Fade.
  • Solas takes Kathan into the Fade, showing him scenes from Arlathan. Realizing just how much was lost by the war and the Veil is staggering.
  • Kathan and Cassandra, quietly sharing stories of their respective deceased big siblings.

What's the Worst that Could Happen?
  • Morrigan's reaction to Kieran's death, followed by Jerath's reaction to her death. Though the latter quickly turns into Nightmare Fuel
  • Jerath has to mercy kill Saitada, Brehan, and Cathiel.
  • Hawke's Heroic BSoD when he learns Carver is dead.
  • Turana's best friend dies because she accidentally spilled his secret.
