So You Want To / Write A Plot Twist

Go To

So you've decided to add a plot twist to your work.

Necessary Tropes

  • The Reveal A plot twist is a reveal that will shake up the plot.

Choices, Choices

Plot Twists are changes in stories that have so much variety, a character could be revealed as Evil All Along, or a Sheep in Sheep's Clothing, or a badass who is actually relevant to the plot all along. Again what plot twist you chose should depend on how is your story structured.

Pitfalls

A good plot twist is such a rarity, and usually badly set up ones can fall under one of these two tropes:

  • Captain Obvious where there is too much info pointing to a specific twist
  • Ass Pull the inverse of the above, where there's too little

Anything in these two catagories you shouldn't use as an example, unless you want to use it as an example as how to not do it.

Suggested Plots

We suggest adding a twist to your plot only if it doesn't contradict everything we know of the character before. As a bad twist can slice a plot in half.

Extra Credit

Because like we said above, great twists are quite rare, so we will give a special mention to those before.
