Tropes for the series:

  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: In the first episode, the study group included a woman (Linda O'Connor, played by Katharine Dunfee Clarke) who never appeared again. In the second episode, she was replaced without explanation by a different woman, Logan, a major character without explanation by a different woman, Logan, a major character throughout Season One. When, after cancellation on its original network, the series returned for Season Two on a cable network, Logan had inexplicably vanished, never to be mentioned again.
  • Improbably High I.Q.: Law student Franklin Ford III claims to have an IQ of 190.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Prof. Kingsfield. For instance, in one episode he apparently blows off both Logan's desperate phone call from jail and Hart's attempt to hand in his extra credit work. However, Kingsfield actually intervenes behind the scenes to get Logan released and turns over an entire class period for Hart to present the research he's done.
  • One-Word Title:
    • Nancy.
    • Cinderella.
    • Commitments.
    • Snow.
    • Limits.
    • Pressure.
    • Security.
    • Honor.
    • Graduation.
  • Onion Tears: An early episode opens with a close-up of Hart weeping as he describes how mean Prof. Kingsfield is; camera pulls back to show him chopping up a bunch of onions.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: When the study group is formed during the pilot episode, one woman is included. In the very second episode, that character's place in the study, with no explanation, has been taken by another woman, Logan who remains a major character for the rest of the first season.
