The 1995 TV adaptation of Edith Wharton's novel of the same name. Directed by Maggie Wadey and produced by The BBC, it completes the narrative that was left unfinished in the novel.

The novel was adapted again, this time more loosely, in a 2023 Apple TV+ series.

Provides examples of:

  • Adapted Out: Lizzie's younger sister, Mabel, doesn't appear in the show.
  • Beta Couple: In contrast to Connie and Nan's unhappy marriages, Lizzie marries Hector Robinson, a Nouveau Riche industrialist with a similar background to her own, and the two of them end up being relatively happy together.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Laura facilitates Annabel and Guy's reunion, which leads to them running away to start a new life together in South Africa, but results in Laura breaking up with Guy's father, Sir Helmsley Thwaite.
  • Naturalised Name: Laura Testvalley's surname is actually Testavaglia, as she comes from a family of Italian revolutionaries.
  • Out of Focus: Most of the action focuses on Nan and Laura, so once Ginny and Mabel are married off, we see a lot less of them.
  • The Un-Favourite: Upon his father's death, Richard bitterly laments that his father never took any interest in him and that he wasn't sure if he even knew Richard's name.
