On the evening of their university graduation, July 15th 1988, Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morely, meet for the first time and spend the night together. This night begins a 20 year story in which we see a glimpse of their lives July 1th of every year.
The show premiered on Netflix in early 2024.
The Series provides examples of
- The Alcoholic: Dexter struggles with alcoholism throughout the series, especially during tough times, such as his mother’s struggle with and eventual cancer and Emma’s tragic death. He’s eventually able to conquer it with the help of his family and his friends.
- Amicable Exes: Dexter and Sylvie eventually achieve this relationship with her being the one to help him through his grief from Emma’s death
- Bittersweet Ending: Emma and Dexter finally get together only for her to be killed two years later by a reckless driver leaving Dexter devastated. However he is eventually able to come to terms with his grief and move forward for his daughter.
- Race Lift: Emma is Caucasian in the novel and film. In the series she’s of South Asian descent.
- Tough Love: Stephen’s parenting style is this when Dexter seems to be drinking himself to death. Though he’s not a stranger to gentler parenting when Dexter needs it.
- Two-Timing with the Bestie: Sylvie begins an affair with Dexter’s close friend Callum.
