The story is largely set in the fictional slum "La 1-5/18", although some scenes were filmed at the real slum Villa 31. Lola is a teacher proud of living there and is worried because narcos and drug dealers are taking over the slum. The priest Lorenzo decides to stay permanently in the slum when the local priest suffers a heart attack and dies, despite the wishes of his family that would prefer him to be at a safer place. Bruno returns to the slum to manage the bar when his father is growing too old to do it, but the actual reason is that he does not want it to turn into a place of drug sale and he feared that his other son would be easily co-opted if he inherited it.

- Artifact Title: The slum is named "La 1-5/18". It was renamed "La Peñaloza" in the first episode, but everybody keeps calling it by the original name.
- Back-Alley Doctor: Sebastian treated Bruno's gunshot injury in the slum. After everything is done, he mentioned that he has to report the gunshot, but the priest convinces him to keep his mouth shut.
- Helicopter Parents: Renata is always trying to know what is his son doing, and who are his friends.
- I Will Find You: Rita had to give up his son for adoption when she was young. Now she found him, he's the adoptive son of Sebastian and Renata.
- Open-Minded Parent: As a foil to Renata, Sebastian prefer to give his son his space, and not to judge things harshly.
- Wrong Side of the Tracks: Most of the story takes place in a slum.
