Duel contains examples of:

  • Clones Are People, Too: A main theme for the second half of the show once Sung Joon realizes he and the murderer, Sung Hoon, are both clones. Sung Joon wants to live life normally, but Sung Hoon is obsessed with revenge.
  • Darkest Hour: The kidnapper allows Detective Jang to see his daughter and then threatens him to do his bidding or else.
  • Easy Amnesia: Sung Joon gets this at the beginning of the series, causing the police to believe he's feigning this since his fingerprints were left at the scene of the crime.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Seo Jin, daughter of the Chairman of Samyoung Hospital.
  • I Have Your Wife: The main plot is kicked off when someone abducts the daughter of Detective Jang.
  • Our Clones Are Identical: Sung Joon and Sung Hoon are identical right down to the hair and fingerprints. The fingerprints part is what makes the police suspect him as the actual culprit.
  • Red Herring: With Sung Joon's convenient amnesia, some viewers may suspect once they guess Sung Joon is a clone of Sung Hoon that Sung Joon was created to take the rep for Sung Hoon. He's not.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Subverted with Sung Hoon, as even though he kidnaps Detective Jang's daughter, he ends up sharing many tender moments with her. Played very straight with the organ trafficking gang.
