Tropes for the series:

  • Artifact Title: The program was conceived at a time when CBS was desperately trying to launch a successful morning show. The other shows were also named after the day of the week they were broadcast (i.e.: Monday Morning, Tuesday Morning, etc.) Sunday Morning is the only one of these that remains and even still uses elements from the original sets. The daily editions dealt more with the actual news of the morning, as opposed to Sunday Morning's long-running blend of news, the arts, and human interest features; Bob Schieffer anchored these daily editions as well (until October 27, 1980, when Charles Kuralt started doing the daily broadcasts as well [the title was shortened to simply Morning]; in 1981, Diane Sawyer became Kuralt's co-anchor, and the two were on until Jan. 1982).
  • Catchphrase: Osgood's closing line each episode: "I'm Charles Osgood. And until next week, I'll see you on the radio."note
    • Jane Pauley has one today:
Jane: I'm Jane Pauley; please join us when our trumpet sounds again next Sunday Morning.
  • The Face of the Sun: The show's main logo is a "Sun of May"-style image, and at the end of each story the picture fades into an artist's illustration of such.
  • Human-Interest Story:
    • Many segments deal with how people are dealing with a crisis, either during the COVID-19 pandemic or hurricanes that have upended many lives.
  • Once an Episode: At the end of each episode, there is a nature segment, either in Yellowstone or a forest that shows the beauty of the natural world.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted, as the first two hosts of the show were both named Charles. Sadly, both of the first two hosts named Charles are deceased— Kuralt passing on July 4, 1997 at 62 of lupus, and Osgood passing on January 23, 2024 at 91 of dementia.
