Sandbox / More Irish Than The Irish

Go To

More Irish than the Irish is a sociological phenomena where a person raised outside of their ancestral culture adopts and takes it more seriously than the people raised inside the culture. The trope is supposedly named for the large number descendants of Irish immigrants, who upon returning to their homeland, take the culture and practices more seriously than the local Irish do.

This can be broken into several types:

  • Type 1 - A person visiting The Old Country throws themselves into their ancestral culture.
  • Type 2 - A person having little to no contact with The Old Country adopts the values and ideals of such.

In all cases there can be quite a bit of Values Dissonance when the person lives up to the ideals of The Old Country better than the locals do.

  • This trope could easily be called "More Klingon than the Klingons" thanks to Worf of Star Trek The Next Generation. He was Raised by Humans after the death of his father, and learned Klingon culture through reading about it. He ends up being more honorable (and honor-bound) than most other Klingons, something that is taken advantage by scheming politicians in a long story arc for his character.
