In 1718, at the dusk of The Golden Age of Piracy, Captain Sylla and his quartermaster Olivier de Vannes live a dangerous but unshackled life aboard the ship Neptune. Shortly after Olivier becomes captain of his own ship, the Fortune, he and his crew find a drifting slaver whose white occupants are gone… but not the black ones. Led by a charismatic queen called Maryam, the former slaves soon prove to be valuable comrades and an integral part of the crew.
While the feats of the "Negro Witch" spread across the Caribeans, the pirates decide to sail towards Africa to find a land where they can create a small but free nation and escape the royal authorities that mercilessly hunt their peers.
La République du Crâne (The Republic of the Skull) is a 2022 graphic novel written by Vincent Brugeas and drawn by Ronan Toulhoat, of Block 109 and Le Roy Des Ribauds fame. The story focuses on the pirates as people that have lost their place in society and try to find a little bit of freedom and brotherhood in an age of tyrany.
