For the play Legoland by Jacob Richmond

Legoland contains examples of:

  • Bad "Bad Acting": In order to receive attention and get people to talk to them, the siblings decide to have Ezra fake seizures in Wal-Mart. The stage directions specifically state that Penny calls for help "mechanically", and, upon his "recovery", Ezra thanks again everyone in a "coached" manner. Despite this, everyone around still becomes genuinely emotional and fearful for his safety.
  • Befriending the Bullied: After Penny has been bullied and tormented mercilessly by all her classmates to the point of suicidal ideation, Tammy Edwards takes pity on her and decides to teach her how to become cool. She also gives Penny a Seven Up CD, which kicks off the next story arc.
  • Duck Season, Rabbit Season: Ezra claims that he doesn't really exist. Penny disputes his claim, and they get into an argument, with Penny trying to tell the audience he really exists. Eventually, Penny flips her claim, tricking Ezra into admitting his existence.
Ezra: In real life I don't exist.
Penny: Yes, he does.
Ezra: No, I don't.
[...]
Penny: Yes.
Ezra: No.
Penny: No.
Ezra: Yes.
Penny: Ha!
Ezra: (defeated) I exist.
  • Full-Name Ultimatum: Exaggerated when Penny chews Ezra out for swearing (for the first time in the show, anyways). She calls him by his full name, including all five of his middle names.
Penny: EZRA GINSBERG MARTIN LUTHER WOODY GUTHRIE LAMB!.. This is a theatre… you can’t say the F-word unless you’re pretending to be poor!
  • Hippie Name: Discussed. Penny talks about how, on Elysium, all the kids had unusual natural and communist names.
Penny: Right, and all the kids there were named Rainbow, Sunshine, Trotsky. Ezra even had a best friend named Noam Chomsky... SkyTrain.
  • Inevitably Broken Rule: Nobody was allowed to leave Elysium until they turned sixteen. Penny and Ezra, who were thirteen and (around) ten at the time, snuck out dozens of times to fake seizures at Wal-Mart.
  • The Outside World: On Elysium, there was a rule that stated nobody could enter the outside world, which they called “Legoland”, until they turned sixteen. Penny and Ezra, of course, snuck out on multiple occasions before then.
  • Understatement: Penny says that she wrote to Johnny Moon "a few" times after he suddenly disappeared. Ezra clarifies that, by "a few" times, she means exactly 3,567 times.
  • Unstoppable Rage: When JK-47 calls Penny a "femamist lesbian", Penny stops in the middle of reading her letter, becomes very angry, and throws the scalding-hot coffee at him, then beats the living daylights out of him while biting him in the face.

As portrayed by Celine Stubel
"Okay so lookit! When I got to thirteen... I was getting kind of itchy, you know? To see a world that didn’t consist only of naked, smiling, enlightened hippies..."
The sixteen-year-old protagonist of Legoland. Though she is immensely nervous, she chose the option of performing public service speeches after attacking a famous celebrity. She was home-schooled on the hippie commune Elysium before being sent to Saint Cassian Catholic School with her brother Ezra.
