Much like the source materials, it involves characters building and fighting with their custom Gunpla models, and these models are usually real models made for use in the roleplay and BFS tabletop system. These models are submitted by players and rated by GMs, and the quality of the model in real life can also affect performance in the roleplay, much like how model quality is important in the shows themselves.
Having been played for almost ten years, the current setting is the Gunpla Academy in Prague, moving away from the original Academy in London.

Build Fight System provides examples of:
- Character Customization: Diver avatars are almost unlimited in their possibilities, despite the limitation to vaguely humanoid forms.
- Cyberspace: GBN.
- Digital Avatar: Within GBN, people use customizable avatars of different kinds to interact with others and act as pilots of their Gunpla.
- Imported Alien Phlebotinum: It lifts its foreign technology directly from its source materials; Plavsky from Build Fighters, and Eldoran software from Build Divers.
