Repeating Ad / Northwest Pennsylvania

Go To

A local business in the Erie, Pennsylvania tri-state area may elect to run an ad during local programming or spots more often than others. This subpage mainly concerns the local ads aired by the broadcast networks of WJET (ABC), WSEE (CBS), WICU (NBC), or WFXP (FOX), as well as on the area's cable networks. Outside television, a few of the ads listed have also appeared on social media such as Instagram.

  • Car dealerships in the area seem to have a really bad habit of this. These types of ads are extremely common to the point that some local spots can be filled with nothing but car ads.
    • Interstate Mitsubishi and Interstate Nissan, the local Mitsubishi and Nissan dealerships in the area, have ads that play every hour or half hour. In the past, it would end with a jingle.
    • It is impossible to go at least one hour without seeing an ad for Auto Express Superstore, another car dealership in the area focusing on Kia and Mazda models. They pull off this trope a lot and use all four variants, with the worst offender being the A1/A2 variant. It doesn't help from the fact they are also a major sponsor for the area's local news programs and some poorly-timed ad breaks can lead to one of these ads. In addition, these ads also showed up on Instagram in all places.
      • Most of the time and even though their ads are only 15 seconds long, two different Auto Express ads will be shown back-to-back to fill in a 30-second slot. There have been multiple instances of three Auto Express ads airing in a local ad spot. They usually end with the phrases "I wanna see ya in a Kia" or "Make it a Mazda"; pretty much anyone who has seen any of those ads too many times will have those phrases stuck in their head since they bought tons of airtime.
      • There's another ad that begins with "Today's power buy can be found at..." that WJET loves airing twice in a row as of 2024, though the only difference is the location of the offer. And yes, this also includes ads on their website and app.
      • Starting in the 2023 holiday season and lasting until the spring of 2024, WSEE repeatedly ran ads for a campaign titled "Road trip." It was tough to escape; it almost always aired twice in a row, sandwiched other ads, bookended breaks, and during a nightly news broadcast on October 27, 2023, and February 12, 2024, the ad aired thrice in a row during the local spot. One break on February 28, 2024 had the ad air four times in one break.
    • Not to mention the ads for the local Chevy and Hyundai dealerships in the area aired heavily for years. Nowadays, not so much. The Chevy ads got more airtime than the Hyundai ads, and they also showed up a lot on Cartoon Network during local ad spots. In the last commercial break of a WSEE morning newscast on September 8, 2023, an ad for said Chevy dealership played, followed by an ad for Stan's Garden Center, then immediately played the same commercial again.
  • Crazy Monkey, a local manufacturer of party equipment such as bounce houses and such, would often have their ads play twice in the same break. It has since died down.
  • Construction company Braendel Services is also no stranger to this trope. It's hard to find anyone in the area who hasn't seen their ads, which have been running for half a century now. That's because they play it way too much due to the sheer amount of airtime they buy every year. WSEE tends to show these ads the most and it airs every hour or half-hour or in many cases twice in one break. In fact, one Google review said they're overpriced because of this trope. Since the 1980s, the worst offender has been during the holiday season, playing nearly every single ad break, sometimes twice in a row or the same break. Some breaks would air it THREE times!
  • Some businesses are known to do this whenever they have a special event. Even local expos and conventions have fallen victim to this.
    • Since the 2020s, ads for Oliver's Beer Garden, a local bar at a Hampton Inn in the area, are another common sight. Every time they have a special event, most of their ads will play twice in the same break.
    • John V. Schultz and Arthur F. Schultz, two furniture stores within the area, love to do this whenever they host a sale. When this happens, it will become nearly impossible to go through a single commercial break without seeing one, and some breaks will play their ads twice. A few poorly-timed ad breaks during nightly news broadcasts led to said ad.
    • Ads for the local Presque Isle Downs and Casino are rarely aired, but whenever they have a special event (say a big jackpot for example), the ads usually air twice in one break.
    • If you live in Erie, you cannot escape the ads for the Waldameer and Water World amusement park during the summer. They play it a lot, usually once during every other break. Sometimes a single ad may air twice during a single break, but during 2023 their ads have always been playing twice.
    • Ads for Peek'n Peek Resort located on the PA-NY border are also another common sight. Unlike the Waldameer one above, these are usually aired throughout the year, but whenever they have a sale, their ads often play twice in one break.
    • Every year since the 2000s, whenever Sander's Markets, a local supermarket chain located within the Lake Erie region of the United States (northwest Pennsylvania included), hosts their Moonlight Madness sale, their ads usually play twice in the same break.
    • As mentioned above, anything related to expos is fair game, as their ads will almost always air twice. This happened to an event hosted by Dahlkemper's Jewelry Connection, a local jewelry store, in December 2022. In the days leading up to the Erie Home and Garden Expo in March 2023, they did the same thing. Then they obsessed over the ads for the RV and Outdoor Adventure Expo and Boat & Fishing Show in February 2024.
  • Barber National Institute's ads are known to be repetitive. One can't simply turn on daytime television without seeing one of their ads. They're usually aired once an hour, sometimes less than that. One particular ad, titled "Addie's Story," kept airing every morning during the summer of 2022. It would later kick back into full swing during that year's holiday season.
  • The Warner Theatre does this a lot for their upcoming events:
    • This tends to happen with any children's touring production, with the most notable offender being Sesame Street Live when it would come to the area during the 2010s; they would start airing the ads weeks before the day of said performance and play it once almost every ad break, and sometimes twice in the same break.
    • It's not just limited to Sesame Street Live. The Broadway in Erie series also did this too when they put on the original Broadway production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They ended up invading nearly every break, and it would get awfully annoying after seeing the ad for four to eight weeks before the actual performance!
    • They also did the same thing with Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert when that came to the area. Unlike other performances, they started the ads months before it was performed.
    • The promotional efforts for Co Comelon Live! JJ's Journey were simply inescapable; they aired the ad every other break starting in early October 2022. That show wasn't performed until November 26 of that same year.
    • They obsessed over the ad for Blippi: The Wonderful World Tour in February 2023, playing in a lot of ad breaks, sometimes playing two to three times an hour.
    • They started the ad for Disney Junior Live On Tour: Costume Palooza a few months in advance in June 2023. They were aired sparingly until August 2023 when the ad for The Price is Right Live joined the airwaves. During that time, one of the ads for either two events aired every few hours. Sometimes, a break would include the former ad, and the latter ad would play in the next break.
    • Sometimes, two different ads for two different events may play in one break. During a local newscast on October 2, 2023, the ad for Jesus Christ Superstar played, followed by the ad for The Price is Right Live playing later in the same break.
  • The Erie Insurance Arena, even during the times it was known as the Erie Civic Center or Tullio Arena, has also played with this trope for some of their events:
    • Anything related to Disney On Ice is fair game. WJET tends to air these ads a lot, but several cable channels such as Cartoon Network also play them during the local slots.
    • This trope ended up being subverted for PAW Patrol Live! The Great Pirate Adventure, despite its parent franchise already having a history of overplayed ads on its home channel. The ads for it were barely seen at all.
  • During the second-to-last break in nightly news broadcasts, three local ads from the area would be played. If only two sponsors advertise during that break, one company will end up sandwiching the other sponsor, meaning the ad that airs first will be shown again after the second ad.
  • Since 2012, ads for the Happi 92.7 radio station in the area air frequently. If you live in the area, chances are you will have seen it at least once or twice a break. This is usually the first ad that plays after nightly news broadcasts.
  • Not even the local news programs' ads are safe from this:
    • Throughout 2022, WSEE and WICU (who form Erie News Now) repeatedly ran ads asking viewers to support the people of Ukraine during the Russian invasion every break, usually as the last ad before a show begins or continues.
    • In November 2023, ads for Erie News Now's "How Cool Is Your School" campaign consisting of kids screaming the network's name kept playing over and over during local spots.
    • In the month leading up to the Great North American Eclipse on April 8, 2024 for which Erie was in the path of totality, WSEE repeatedly ran five-second countdown ads as the last ad of any local spot or break.
  • Iadeluca Chiropractic, a local chiropractic, was also another common ad that aired regularly during the 2000s, before dying down in the late 2010s. Though it was mostly confined to broadcast networks, it also showed up frequently on Cartoon Network during local ad breaks. They started running again in January 2024; during a nightly newscast on January 12, 2024, two different Iadeluca ads played in one break. Iadeluca has been doing this ever since.
  • Christmas and holiday ads are known to be a big offender of this trope:
    • During the holiday season, it is difficult to go through a single commercial break without seeing an ad for the Millcreek Mall's events, including Santa visits, for that month. It would get to the point of airing every hour or half-hour.
    • Saint Mary's Home of Erie, a local nursing home, loves to do this during the holiday season. They only have one ad for it but the networks love airing it anyway. Sometimes the ad will air twice in one break.
    • During the 2023 holiday season and even into January of 2024, DraftKings Casino ads played nearly every local spot.
  • As of 2023, ads for Tendto, a local credit union, play twice in every break they are shown in.
  • In May 2023, during a local newscast, the ad for Northwest Pennsylvania Regional College, a college offering associate degrees in the northern part of the state, played twice in one break.
  • Ads for the Crime Victim Center of Erie will almost always play twice. If they air during a nightly news broadcast, it will end up sandwiching another local ad.
  • To those who watch television around the time of Erie Gives Day, every break with room for local spots will result in one of these ads playing, and sometimes two different ads for the event will play in one spot.
  • From October until November 2023, infomercials for MyPillow 2.0 played ad nauseum during local spots.
  • During the last commercial break of a local newscast on November 1, 2023, the ad for Nash FM played twice.
