The tale of Jonah and the Whale is one of the most well-known Old Testament stories, and thus has been depicted and referenced in media many times:

Anime & Manga

  • The Kirby: Right Back at Ya! episode "A Whale Of A Tale" is about the characters going on a boat trip and being swallowed by a whale, just like what happened to Jonah in the biblical story.
  • The Superbook episode "Big Fish and Little Fish" retells the story of Jonah. It was also adapted in the second season of the All-CGI Cartoon remake of the anime.

Film - Animated

Music

  • Burning Sensations' song "Belly Of The Whale" references the story, including in the chorus, which goes "I feel like Jonah in the belly of the whale", as well as other times in the song, like a line referencing how Jonah was thrown overboard for not listening to God.
  • Far From Home's song "Big Fish" is based on the story of Jonah, and the chorus talks about how Jonah had to listen to God in order to get out of the fish he was in.
  • VeggieTales songs:
    • "Jonah's Journey", the theme song to the Jonah: An Overboard Adventure! VBS program that would later appear on the CD "Jonah's Overboard Sing-Along" is a song that retells the story of Jonah.
    • "The Ballad of Jonah", from "Pirates' Boat Load of Fun!", tells the story of Jonah to the tune of the theme to Gilligan's Island.
  • The children's song "Who Did Swallow Jonah" references Jonah being swallowed by a whale in its' first verse.

Western Animation

  • The Flintstones: In "Adobe Dick", Fred and Barney are swallowed by the titular whale and find graffiti that reads "Jonah was here."
  • The Simpsons:
    • In "Simpsons Bible Stories", Bart finds the corpse of Jonah during his dream.
    • "Homer and Ned's Hail Mary Pass" contains a movie called "Tales Of The Old Testament" which depicts the scene where Jonah gets swallowed by a whale.
