* CanonDiscontinuity: A couple curious examples that only appear starting with this episode: rather than referring to "Melvin" who owns the god card "Mega Ultra Chicken" (which are their official names in the abridged series), everybody in this episode just calls him "Marik" and the god card "Winged Dragon of Ra" (their official names in the original series). This can probably just be chalked up to forgetfulness on Creator/LittleKuriboh's part.

* ComicallyMissingThePoint: Joey lies to Yugi and tells him he defeated Kaiba in their third place duel, when he actually lost in one turn. Tristan, who witnessed the duel, somehow believes this and tells Joey he's proud of him for winning.

* VillainousBreakdown: Interestingly enough, Melvin starts into one even before it looks like he's going to lose the duel. To be fair, he wasn't the most stable guy to begin with.

* VillainousBreakdown: Interestingly enough, Melvin starts into one even before it looks like he's going to lose the duel. duel, largely due to Yami spending a fair amount of the duel casually rebuffing Melvin's attempts at psychological intimidation by nitpicking inconsistencies (referring to the Shadow Realm as a "Purple Realm") or getting lost in tangents (becoming excited by Melvin's "Shiny Obelisk"). To be fair, he Melvin wasn't the most stable guy to begin with.

* AgentScully: Kaiba's status as such is finally justified: he cannot accept that Yugi was a pharaoh in a past life because that would make Yugi richer and more powerful than Kaiba.

* AgentScully: Kaiba's status as such is finally justified: he cannot accept that Yugi was a pharaoh in a past life because that would make Yugi richer and more powerful than Kaiba.
* BadLiar: Joey's insistence that he won his card game against Kaiba is not at all convincing. [[RuleOfFunny Yami believes him anyway]].
** Yami later struggles with his complete lack of a poker face while trying to convince Melvin that he totally ''doesn't'' have the perfect card to win the duel with.
* BigNo: Melvin does this several times in response to a powerful move by Yami... followed by a LittleNo to reveal that he had the perfect counter all along and was just screwing with everyone.

* ComedicSpanking: Melvin plans to do this to Yami if he wins their duel.
* DisneyDeath: [[spoiler: You never ''really'' thought Marik would be killed off, did you?]]
* DyingDeclarationOfLove: A platonic instance between Marik and Odion. Even with some jokes sprinkled in, it's a genuine TearJerker.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: Marik acts more dignified while awaiting his own death than he has in the entire series thus far (probably because OOCIsSeriousBusiness).
** In a very satisfying and karmic switch of their usual roles, Melvin averts this trope ''hard''.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Acknowledged. Melvin refers to Yugi as being Yami's "hetero life mate". Yami says himself that they are "closer than the most intimate of lovers".
** Unfortunately, [[ItMakesSenseInContext Yugi wants a divorce]].
* InnerMonologue: Parodied. Kaiba, Yami, and Tristan all try to do this at the same time and end up talking over each other's thoughts.
* InsistentTerminology: You know, it's really more of a Purple Realm than a Shadow Realm.
* KarmicDeath: Melvin experiences death by ''hugging''.
* MindLinkMates: Averted. Yami is completely oblivious to the pain his dueling is putting Yugi through.
* ProtagonistCenteredMorality: Melvin gives a [[JerkassHasAPoint pretty reasonable]] accusation that Yami can't exactly condemn him for his actions when he himself is a former pharaoh and slave owner.
* RunningGag: I'm just sayin'.
