Recap / Yu Gi Oh First Anime Series Ep 3 Clash The Strongest Monster

Go To

Seto Kaiba, the young CEO of Kaiba Corporations, transfers into Yugi's class. When over at the game shop, something rare catches his eye: The Blue Eyes White Dragon.

Tropes associated with this episode:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Kaiba switches the real card out for a fake. Everyone notices, though.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Kaiba, he comes off as polite and affable at first, but after the ruse falls he uses brutal methods to get what he wants.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Honda seethes at Miho fawning over Kaiba.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The episode starts with Kaiba's goons beating up a guy for his card.
  • Evasive Fight-Thread Episode: Yugi and Kaiba's first duel is reworked into a draw, so neither side wins.
  • False Friend: Kaiba. Definitely. He pretends to be Yugi's friend, but once he learns that his grandfather has the Blue Eyes White Dragon, he switches the cards and give Yugi a fake. When Yugi begs him to give it back, he drops the acts and sics his guards on him.
  • It Was a Gift: The reason why Yugi's grandfather refuses to give up the card.
  • Rich Bastard: Jounouchi's first impression of Kaiba. Considering what Kaiba does to Yugi and his friends, he was right to assume so.
  • Stepford Smiler: One of the biggest differences from the second series and even the manga. Kaiba is initially friendly towards Yugi and his group, but he’s actually ruthless and selfish enough to hurt others to further his own goals.
  • Tantrum Throwing: What Kaiba does after the draw.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Him nearly being defeated by Yugi.
  • Tranquil Fury: Unlike the second series and the original manga, Kaiba is more calm about being denied the Blue Eyes White Dragon card.
  • Transfer Student Uniforms: Instead of wearing blue pants and shirt like the other boys, Kaiba has a white uniform with a gold border on the cuffs and neck.
  • Undying Loyalty: The Blue Eyes White Dragon refuses to attack Yugi due to its loyalty being with Yugi’s grandfather. It destroys itself rather than attacking Yugi like Kaiba ordered.
