A year after the events of the season 3 finale, Connor and M'gann prepare for their wedding.

Tropes:

  • Fantastic Racism: While Martians' view of Earthlings has zigzagged, it seems certain groups have become more hostile to them by the time the main cast return to M'arzz. It turns out the murder of its recent and progressive ruler, King S'turnn, is the cause, and the two lower castes blame each other for it. While he attempted to end Martian caste prejudice, his widow, Queen J'arlia, decided to undo some of his work.
  • Fantastic Slur: After driving the hostile Martians from her house, M'Gann spots some graffiti left behind. We never get a translation but, according to M'gann, it's considered derogatory for those in the A'ashenn castes like her, and even more so for Earthlings like Conner and Gar.
  • Hope Spot: The Martian Queen is able to convince most of the G'arrunn to stand down while the Zeta-Tube to Earth is completed, and M'gann stops her brother M'comm from seemingly attacking J'onn. Unfortunately, as J'onn steps into the tube, it explodes.
  • Innocently Insensitive: M'gann's sister turns into "Megan Morse" to tease her about her humanoid form. Beast Boy's uncensored thoughts then point out how awkward it is that she's imitating his dead mother, at which point she apologizes. Afterwards, she settles on looking like Rita Farr, which isn't much better because Rita was Beast Boy's adoptive mother and also died tragically, but Beast Boy pretends to be okay with it.
  • Klingons Love Shakespeare: M'arzz has set up a satellite to receive communications from Earth. J'onn has been using it to transmit Earth television, which Martians have taken a liking to, emulating Earth figures with their shapeshifting. The team are surprised to see a group mimicking the Outsiders, who quickly flock to them as fans. They're also unpleased to see an entire group of Martians in the form of Gordon Godfrey.
    • Consul-General R'ess is upset how the above is "corrupting" Mars's original way of life, blaming J'onn for it despite his heroism for their world.
  • Living Legend: J'onn. While the Rabble Rouser is able to get quite the mob to stop Earth-Mars relations, the Queen is able to shame them by asking them to trust J'onn, at which point most of the mob disappears.
  • Locked Room Mystery: Getting away with murder is almost completely unknown on M'arzz, due to the entire population being telepathic. And yet, King S'turnn was somehow murdered anyway, with no known suspects.
  • Mind Rape: While they're walking through the Martian bazaar, a bunch of racist Martians bombard Conner, M'gann, and Garfield with hostility.
  • Nom de Mom: M'gann's sister is now using the last name J'onzz instead of M'orzz to avoid prejudice due to having an A'ashenn last name from her White Martian father, which she claims their parents are okay with.
  • Shout-Out: The name of the capital city of Mars, Ma'aleca'andra, comes from the comics and is a shout out to the native name of Mars in C. S. Lewis's Space Trilogy, Malacandra.
  • Significant Double Casting: Em'ree, who models her humanoid form on Rita Farr's Hello, Megan! character Rita Lee, is voiced by Hynden Walch, who voiced Rita Farr/Elasti-Girl in "Nightmare Monkeys".
  • The Stinger: Halo is speaking with Black Canary, who is serving the role of a counselor, just off-camera, as part of Jefferson's focus on mental health for the League. She says that the shock of Brion's decisions is making her reconsider hers, like examining her relationship to Islam because she respects Gabrielle's hijab enough to have never removed it.
