In Slough, England, mild-mannered bank manager Jamie Winton is suddenly arrested. The police accuse him of numerous counts of theft and cyber-terrorism, as he turns out to be a doppelganger and a perfect genetic match for White Horse, the leader of the hacking group called Deux Ex Machina. To add insult to injury, he learns that his wife Layla, who has been missing for seven years, has been seen in Moscow with White Horse. His alibi being solid, his charges are dropped.
In New Mexico librarian Rhonda McNeil is placed in a prison after allegedly hacking the NSA, her son Spike being the actual hacker. Threatened by a gang of Latinas, she is horrified to learn that Leanne, a seemingly friendly inmate who took her defense, is a white supremacist.
In the Vatican, young nun Sister Celine arrives for a job interview with Father Jude, a cynical chain-smoking priest who has been recently given the job of "Devil's Advocate". In an attempt to show Celine the thick skin she will need to have for the job, Jude maker her cry and leave. He advises her to look for a sign she should take the job before she storms out.
Life seems to go as usual, until the president of the United States of America announces to the world that a large comet is on a direct collision course with Earth, and will strike the world in 34 days, ending all life.
Jamie learns from his mother that he has been adopted, and might have a twin. He gets the pictures of Layla and his twin from the police, and sets out to find his wife.
When a riot erupts in the New Mexico prison after the president's announcement plays, the White Horse hacks into the prison's system and opens all doors and gates. The White Horse drives into the prison on an ambulance and saves Rhonda, while Leanne cuffs herself to Rhonda, inviting herself along.
Sister Celine sees the announcement and the ensuing chaos on the streets of Rome as a sign, and agrees to work with Father Jude.
The You, Me and the Apocalypse episode "Who Are These People? - 34 Days to Go" provides examples of:
- Birthday Episode: One for both Jamie and the White Horse.
- Foreshadowing: Jamie narrates that there are fifteen people in the bunker. Himself, Rhonda and Celine are seen in the bunker during the opening, with Jamie pantsless and very nervous, Rhonda wearing a death row uniform and crying, and Celine holding something in her hand and laughing.
- Heh Heh, You Said "X": White Horse does it to himself when he addresses the prison over the hacked speakerphone, and ends his speech by admitting he simply wanted to say the word "penal" over the speakerphone one last time.
