Episode 84: Angelic

Takes place 28 January 2012.

Short version

Paul shuts down a Devil Jizz supplier and recruits a woman whose mind was combined with the angel Noriel.

Longer version

The Team joins in searching out suppliers of Devil Jizz, which is supplanting other drugs and proving very challenging for the police to address (since some demonic forms are quite combat-capable). They track down a succubus operating out of a "massage" parlour, and shut down her operation, but she tricks them into thinking that she is a human who has simply made a deal with a succubus, and escapes.

While investigating, Paul comes across a magical experiment: a young woman named Linda Danvers who had the (thousands of years of) memories of an angel, Noriel, merged with her mind. The new memories were so much larger than her own that they created a second personality; she is able to shift between the two, with an accompanying physical change. Once she learns the truth of what has happened and that she isn't actually an angel, she begins searching for new purpose in life, using Noriel's extensive knowledge of magic.

The title refers to Linda Danvers/Noriel, who has an angel's memories, including extensive knowledge of magic and an attitude of perpetual righteous indignation, but is not actually an angel.

  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: Kara Zor-El is slowly adjusting to living on Earth, but finds her own capacity for violence quite upsetting.
  • Alternate Universe: Red Lantern Paul gets a segment, where he learns that Komand'r was under the (human) age of consent when they became involved, and has a minor freakout about his mistake. Komand'r, for her part, is angry that he doesn't have more respect for her autonomy. However, he is able to explain himself, and they make up.
  • Empty Shell: Match is dangerously close to this when he finally wakes up, able to recognise the people around him thanks to his programming, but with no ambition and minimal emotion. Paul is hopeful that it's just a lack of life experience and that he'll gradually grow into himself.
  • Frame-Up: Linda Danvers does a clumsy job of pretending to be Supergirl while causing trouble. To anyone who actually knows Kara Zor-El, it's not even slightly convincing; Linda didn't know her, she was just envious of what she imagined Kara had.
  • Fusion Dance: Linda Danvers was given the memories of the angel Noriel, but those were so much more extensive than her own memories that they created a whole Noriel personality. She switches between them with accompanying physical transformation.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Ward Against Metal was probably only a mildly useful spell when first invented, but in the modern era it makes the subject bulletproof.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: Played entirely straight by Red Lantern Paul, who lovingly describes how he was rendered speechless by watching Komand'r's carnal fury against a Dominator. They burn their handprints into a defeated enemy's skull together as a celebration of her birthday.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: "Noriel" attempts to burn locations where she can sense demonic magic, and in doing so she injures a number of civilians and destroys valuable evidence.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Narrowly averted for Red Lantern Paul in the end, albeit with the help of a friend who eats eyeballs like popcorn and thinks humans look like shrunken heads on sticks.
  • Power is Sexy: Grayven is quite aroused by a tense confrontation between Circe and Queen Morgan. Of course, when he tells them so, they immediately back off.
  • Power-Up: With not-really-Noriel's help, Paul is able to provide Beatriz da Costa with greatly improved control over her fire powers.
  • Sex Magic: Carol Bowen runs a "massage parlour" in order to draw power from her customers, with Mind Control magic helping the process along. She even snares both Aquagirl and Doctor Fate for a power-up to escape when Paul has discovered her succubus nature and is closing in.
  • Succubi and Incubi: Carol Bowen. She manages to trick Paul into thinking she's a small business owner who got in over her head with a demonic pact, 'draw power' from both Doctor Fate and Aquagirl, and make her escape while a minion gets captured.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: The succubus is able to make a quick escape to hell after she is found out.
