Recap / White Collar S06 E03 "Uncontrolled Variables"

Go To

Neal is forced work with Keller, and Peter enlists Keller’s Interpol handler so that can all work in cooperation. Neal and Keller’s new mission from the Pink Panthers requires Neal to pose as a chef to gain access to a woman working at the targeted firm Atlas Tech, where he must then steal something for them.

Tropes:

  • Bitch Slap: Amy delivers a sharp slap to Neal when she finds out he lied to her and used her to gain access to a file at the company she works for.
  • Borrowed Without Permission: Mozzie brings a bunch of electronic devices to Peter’s house that he uses to create a randomizer:
Peter: Do I want to know how you got all this stuff?
Mozzie: Um, let's just say I borrowed them from someone's personal collection.
    Peter: Mozzie...
Mozzie: In exchange for something from mine.
  • Boyfriend Bluff: When Neal refuses to deceive Amy, Keller starts to bother her, and Neal steps in to protect her by pretending to be her boyfriend.
  • Declining Promotion: After Amy tells her boss that she stole the file to reveal a security flaw, she is promoted but declines the position and quits her job because she knows she didn't earn it:
Amy: I don't use and manipulate people to get what I want. I'm not like you.
  • Frame-Up: Keller breaks into Amy's house, threatening her and planning to plant the disk on her when her boss discovers it's missing.
  • Hands-On Approach: Neal teaches Amy how to cut vegetables by holding the knife together with her.
  • Jurisdiction Friction: There is conflict between Luc Renaud and Peter because Luc wants to bring down the Pink Panthers with Interpol, while Peter wants to collaborate:
Peter: You work with me or you're out.
  • Liar Revealed: Amy finds out that Neal lied to her when Neal protects her after Keller threatens her in her home.
  • Moment Killer: Neal has June intentionally disrupt his date with Amy to soften the blow when she realizes he betrayed her.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Neal feels guilty when he has to deceive innocent Amy:
Neal: I never wanted to be this guy, Moz. Someone who hurts innocent people.
    Mozzie: The conman's quandary.
  • Never Bring a Knife to a Gun Fight: Mozzie makes a reference to this trope when he brings a USB stick to the security room and is confronted with 70s tech:
Mozzie: Looks like I brought a light saber to a knife fight.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Keller claims that he and Neal are alike:
Keller: See, guys like us, we hurt people around us.
Neal: I’m not a guy like you.

Keller: You keep telling yourself that, sweetheart.
  • Older Is Better: The security room uses technology from the 1970s to prevent hacking. Mozzie cannot use his USB stick to download the data, so he has to steal the entire first-generation minnow disk to make a copy later.
  • Targeted to Hurt the Hero: Neal is confident that after bringing down the Panthers, he will be free. However, Keller warns him that he can never be free after betraying the Panthers, and they will kill his loved ones to hurt him if they don't get him:
Keller: Yeah, you're living in a fairy tale, Caffrey. No matter what happens, me and you, we're hunted men. We take down Woodford and his crew, it's never over. Even in prison they'll come looking for us. And their reach, my friend, it is far, and it is wide. And the Panthers, Neal, they don't stop looking for rats until they're dead. Until then, guess who they go after. People closest to you. And they make it hurt, Caffrey. They make it hurt so bad that you'll wish that they found you. So you enjoy this freedom you're working so hard to get. Because when you're footloose and fancy free, those people that you love so much... they're on death row.
  • The Teetotaler: Mozzie is surprised that Luc, a frenchman, does not drink, not even wine.
