Recap / What We Do In The Shadows S 5 E 8 The Roast

Go To

Laszlo is feeling down and barely leaves his study anymore. In an attempt to cheer him up, the Vampires decide to throw him a Roast and invite their friends and neighbors. But things go south when during the roast, The Baron learns Guillermo was the one that almost killed him back in the first season.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • The Aristocrats: Colin Robinson tries to tell one of these jokes, but (likely intentionally) ruins it by revealing the title "The Aristocrats" right away.
  • Bait-and-Switch. Nandor terrifies Guillermo by saying he knows the man's been keeping a secret and should fess up ... to passing gas while hiding inside his coffin.
  • Disney Death: The Baron ultimately seemingly kills Guillermo, but Laszlo quickly realizes it is not actually Guillermo but rather the last of the Guillermo-like animal hybrids he made in the previous episode.
  • Don't Explain the Joke: When the Baron fails to understand a joke about Guillermo, the Guide explains it to him....by revealing Guillermo was the one who almost killed the Baron.
  • Glad I Thought of It: The Guide is the first to come up with the idea for a roast, but the vampires ignore her. Then Colin Robinson proposes the same idea and the vampires agree, with everyone acting like it was his idea the whole time.
  • Internal Reveal: The Baron learns Guillermo is a vampire hunter and was the one who (though accidentally) almost killed him by exposing him to sunlight.
  • Last Place You Look: Guillermo hides from The Baron in Nandor's coffin, claiming it's the last place the Baron would think to look.
  • Morton's Fork: The vampires realize the fight between the Baron and Guillermo can only end bad for them if they don't stop it. If the Baron wins, they loose their familiar and a close friend, but if Guillermo wins and kills the Baron, they will all die too as they all descend from his vampiric line of siring.
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: Colin Robinson is on the receiving end of one when Nandor opens the roast:
Nandor: So many illustrious guests here on the dais tonight. And also Colin Robinson.
  • Not Again: Just when Guillermo and the Baron have finally made peace, Guillermo again ends up exposing the Baron to sunlight and burning him to a crisp (though not as bad as last time).
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: Up until now The Baron was mainly played as a joke character and rather harmless despite his seemingly fearsome reputation, but this episode shows that reputation is actually a well deserved one. Because once he starts fighting back, even Guillermo, who normally mops the floor with any vampire, is no match for him.
  • The Roast: The first part of the episode is about the vampires throwing a roast for Laszlo.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Once the Baron knows the truth, he becomes hell bent on killing Guillermo. And considering how powerful a vampire The Baron is, even a naturally born vampire killer like Guillermo has to run for his life. Fortunately, the other vampires intervene in time and force the two to talk things over.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: The Baron, after learning the truth and hijacking The Roast, tears into the vampires for having gone soft, having forgotten their old traditions, and harboring a vampire killer in their house. At first the vampires think it's a bad attempt by the Baron to roast them and laugh about it, until they realize he is dead serious.
  • Troll: At the end of the episode, Laszlo reveals his sulking was all part of a huge prank he pulled on his housemates. He was just thinking how he could best arrange the books in his study.
